Health and Wellness with Julie Duncan

hey hey everyone I am here with there we go isn't she a doll well I'm the doll and this is Julie Duncan and so I am really really excited to be able to do this podcast with her Julie and I met I mean I don't know Julie maybe five or six years ago quite a while back yeah yeah it was quite a while before Co so um that was that was quite fun her and I are both into health and we were uh we still are Juice Plus tower garden and all that kind of fun stuff but our relationship grew into so much bigger and so much better so Julie's part of the um of my entrepreneurs hangout um group um she's a powerful connector she's a great coach so I couldn't wait to have her on the podcast and so Julie just tell our listeners a little bit more about you thank you Kylie yes I'm super happy to have reconnected because you know life happens but we've reconnected in an entrepreneur world so that's super fun um so I live in Virginia not too far from you and goodness gracious I've worn a lot of hats in my life just like many of your listeners most recently uh last July I formed my LLC for life coaching and it was really kind of born out of I think FD nesting if you want to know the truth of the matter because there were a sense of what now when both of our kids were you know living their life and living their SP respective careers in Richmond Virginia so um it was really born out of that and then since then I've done a few other bucket list things have that have been super fun and I've always been kind of a hungry what's more girl I just have and I can't even put a finger on I was thinking today why is that you know I it's hard to put a finger on it but I always kind of had that disposition love it love it so I was excited when we got together and we kind of just chatted a little bit and you had said that you co-produced a book with Les Brown well like kudos for you that's awesome girl thank you thank you so he's been a mentor for a really really long time and I don't know if your listeners know his story but I would really really encourage them to just if they're interested at all just go to YouTube go to Spotify find a podcast you can just hear his story in so many different Arenas but he had me at hello as the saying goes and here's the thing I watched him one time years ago he was in the hospital room doing a Facebook live he said cancer four times and he was joking with a nurses he was in the hospital again and he was joking with the nurse he's like hey hold on I can't really do that IV right now talking to my people like what Ser right and there was all these Hearts going up on the Facebook live and I was just like so enamored with him and his character and his his conviction to serve the world and he's done that now for 79 years and I've always wanted to write but it was pretty Dawning to think about doing my own thing and so different points of my life now I'm ready I feel more ready to embark on that Journey some day but when I heard what he was doing I was like oh my gosh I I want to tell my story so I joined him and collaborated I shared my story uh 15 contributors so I'm a co-author and it's just very hot off the press and it's just opened a lot of doors but more importantly it's a bucket list that I always had and you know Kylie we talked before this podcast about limiting beliefs and I was ridden ridden ridden with them growing up and some I think it was my own doing because I was just always so hungry for more was never enough so it was a perfect next step for me um and it really kind of tapped into filling the bucket list that's been there for me for a really long time which I encourage everybody to make your bucket list you know we're not getting any younger and see what's next in your life I mean my gosh it just is so fulfilling to me and it's interesting children you know no no it is you're right you're right it's interesting I was on a uh on a zoom call today and the guy we were talking about he has three bucket lists and and it's it's not just one and I don't think I could pick just one either you know you've got your your you've got your bucket list as in it could be the fun bucket it could be the philanthropic bucket it could be the what's next bucket you know but you got to have some bucket list and I like that but also I think intentional ways and thoughts and beliefs all right we're going to talk about some some of um the beliefs right now but you've got to have that intention of like how am I going to fill this bucket yeah so so Julie now let's talk a little bit about your life coaching um business and what what's entail for us I mean I know obviously limited beliefs are a big part of how you teach and how you coach so give us just a little bit of you know um a little bit of on your business as as a life coach like what what is your core value what is your core thing that you talk about oh my gosh this is just speaks to my soul because as I said I was hungry for more I had a feeling of just never being enough low self-confidence low self-worth all those things that go into um limiting beliefs and I we didn't have the tools I didn't have the tools I'm a little bit old right so I didn't have all the tools I'm not going to tell your list is how old but ha I didn't have all the tools that we have today at all all and it was just a matter of really being hungry and just pushing through some really hard trials and tribulations and it brings me so much joy today to be able to take a course learn about uh neurolinguistic programming was my latest one like how the power of the mind works I'm like are you kidding me and to be able to then help other people so they don't have to be suffer and it can be so painful to just not believe in yourself and live with past trauma and all the things that g to why we hold ourselves back and why professional women do so it brings me great joy to be able to help people break through that and um be able to bring so many resources because that's really what coaching is all about it's so different than counseling although you know my masters is in couns Psychology obviously I'm hold that in high esteem but coaching's a different ball game and I love I'm a research person and I'm a resource person research resource um I love being able to bring tools to the table and then seeing people use those tools and then come back and go oh my gosh I see this differently my perception's different who that's me what it's all about it's serving it's about serving right no no and I can feel your passion and and and you and I talked about serving before so that's awesome so what do you think shaped like the core beliefs from your childhood from a child how how did how did all of this like what do you think shaped that so interestingly enough because I'm an information junkie I've learned along the way and I'll be very short about this because there's just so much depth to this but it's interesting to me that I didn't really have any understanding about what I believe my thoughts my patterns it just poured out of me and that's how I live my life but come to find out there's some real influences on our core beliefs who who knew yeah right 0 to7 they say that our core beliefs are really cemented really foreign by our caretakers Society culture you know all the things that are around us and you know my parents were very loving but there was five divorces collectively there was single mother married times and I was always with my mother when she was a single mother and being a single mother's hard my parents were laborers so I saw a lot of that and there wasn't a lot of connection between like church and community and I had wonderful grandparents and you know family but the things that I was seeking as a child there was some scarcity so then I grew up with a feeling which again I think I did a lot to myself of never being enough and being hungry for more and I would compare all the time it's very painful to talk about and I mean I pushed through it obviously but it's painful and I was very empathic so I think about you know other people that go through this kind of stuff and it's really it's really painful so there were two pivotal things you know I come into it as a child I come into as a teenager with this feeling of comparison Never Enough some scarcity of my life lack of self-confidence self-worth and then two pivotal things happened one was there was a knock on the door at 23 a.m. and that's good thing and it was a policeman standard there and he shared the news that my brother was killed in a triple fatality car accident oh woo that was pivotal and you know I was thinking grief has a way of bringing up some things in us that we've tried to bury and mask and all of a sudden they're right there in the Forefront so 17 years old grief was just insurmountable I had wonderful people in my life I had wonderful friends to carry me through but the fact was it was kind of like the veil was starting to come off my perfectionism were perfect I'm perfect my impostor syndrome so that was number one so that happened in December and I was 17 years old so fast forward about 3 months later I'm sitting in the guidance counselor's office and again riddled with a lot of that stuff going on inside plus the grief and my guidance counselor says five words and I didn't have a plan B Kye there was nothing else on the plate for me except going to college he said you are not College material now now now if there would have been a trophy for party girl I would have won the trophy transparency full transparency I wasn't into high school and especially after my brother passed away I was like I'm just going to flounder I'm going to be the party girl and be the L the party because that was my mask really yeah yeah yeah I can imagine yeah so the veil came off and all of a sudden I'm standing there all my friends had a close-nit group of friends they all got plans they're all set and there I am feeling like an feeling like a perfectionist that isn't perfect any longer and he told me I needed to go to Burger King my best bet was to go to Burger King manager at the fast food restaurant where I worked where all my friends worked we had a time of our life that was never on my agenda certain wasn't my any yeah not for long term either not for long term at least right right so that's what I was faced with at 17 years old wow it was it was really challenging and again I didn't have any tools I just I but I had I really had some things on my side one was that I wanted to be a social worker and my brain was very psychology based so that helped me but more importantly I had a grandmother who rode the train during the Great Depression to Penn State Teachers College AKA Penn State University Now by herself and her mother died at age she was three years old so this rural father raised seven kids somehow she navigated the finances that happen I don't know I wish I wish I wish I had more information but I know she did that and got her for you a degree when I had to be a teacher and I was like she can do it I can yeah I love that she was my driving force that's awesome that's awesome so now Fast Track obviously you uh obviously you got your degree in counseling and and then now fast trck as far as like how do you think that your life changes kind of um with your belief systems and stuff like that it's like how did you create the Adaptive ones and stuff that you have now and now you're going to be teaching them so tell us a little bit about that well I thought about that a lot over because I've been doing some podcast I shared my story with Les Brown there wasn't any magic bullet I'll be honest with you it was a pain full one by one step toward success and each thing that I did helped to build a little bit more self-confidence I'm a big fan of building emotional resiliency building your emotional mental strength and understanding that and seeing it and how do we do that we do that by crushing one goal at a time and the next and the next Y and I did it with a lot of pain inside a lot of limiting beliefs feeling still like it imp Oster but honestly Kylie my why was always so big I always had in the back of my mind Mr King who is my guidance counselor his prediction that I was GNA be a fast food manager and remember my setup was hungry I want more less BR talk you got to be hungry and I always wanted more and I'm like oh no I will push through this like my grandmother no matter what yeah so I just did it one step at a time one class at a time one degree at a time really but now I feel like I have the Magic Bullet right because life has changed so much with the internet and all the tools and all the resources Andes and so now I'm on like fire to learn so much and be able to share that because it was so painful trying to do it myself yeah good for you people that believed in me you know you need to find people that believe in you more than you oh yeah absolutely absolutely sister so I know I know you want to talk about tools but I just want to say I think it'd be quite funny if you signed a book and sent it to that guy that that guidance counselor in a nice way in a nice way hey it's me you know you thought I was gonna be a loser but you know so here enjoy this book please you know that would be great you should seek him out and sentiment might feel good to do that yeah I always say that Edinburgh University which is where I got my undergrad degree they gave me options which Mr King never did no I didn't get accept it as a full student sure I had I had conditions to me which I did yeah it was rough but that's great yeah yeah yeah but he gave me no options all right so let's talk about the tools that you talk like tell everybody about like all right what are the tools in your tool belt Julie what have you learned what do you got for us oh my gosh that's a loaded question you ready so I've been studying I took a course actually in NLP neuro neurolinguistic programing which is really about the power of the mind and our language and our beliefs and our patterns of thinking and how we can really rewire and rechain rewire and reprogram those and I say I enough know I know enough now sorry I'm talking too fast to be dangerous yeah that's what I say so I love it I love it that's great yes yes but I'm fascinated by it so I have some tools I'd like to share okay I love it and I'm not an expert in this but man it's fascinating so I'd like to do an exercise with you okay okay and it's to show you the power of the mind with one command because when we command our mind our brain it will seek the things that we command it to do who isn't that revolutionary yeah okay so you ready yep all right I'm I'm going to read you the directions here I'd like you to sit with your legs parallel and put your finger out like this straight ahead okay which doesn't matter which finger no okay wherever you're comfortable straight ahead keep your feet still take a few deep breaths out for yep inhale exhale inhale exhale one more inhale exhale give it all you got okay next what I'd like you to do is not moving your feet physically go to the right turning as far as you can so yep yep yep to as far as you can think of stretching yourself as far as you can can now memorize that spot know where you left off got it mm okay come back okay go ahead and put your arm down now little trust here I'm GNA have you close your eyes take a deep breath let it out three times inhale exhale one more time inhale exhale okay now keeping your eyes closed I want you to raise your arm again and point just like you were doing before now visualize visualize this bringing your arm up pointing and visualize going much further in your mind's eye remember the spot you went to but think about going further take a deep breath one more time in your mind think about going as far as you possibly can you're elastic your arms going to stretch further than you imagine kyy okay open your eyes Okay this time we're going to repeat what you did before feet down feet parallel keep them still take your arms straight forward take a deep breath now stretch as far as you possibly can I can't see if you can see oh I can see oh my oh actually it's right this easy to see because it's on my uh 10K uh post so there you go I can okay so come back how much further do did you go I would say about 20% 20 maybe maybe 30% more wow so talk to me a little bit what do you think that was all about uh I think the mind's a powerful thing and um I think we have to load it with all the things that we want we have to load it um with everything that's positive and think nothing that's negative you know that's my belief system um so I can I can I can I can I will I will I will that's a very big and um so I think that you know where there's a will there's a way and you power through it so I was listening to you you know and I wanted to have my mind really focus on what you were the exercise so um I just let go of my bodily functions as far as like oh how far can I reach my hand and I wasn't thinking about any of that so I was just thinking about what you were saying so awesome so you allowed your mind to absorb that and think about it in a positive aspect I can do further I can do further right and you went 20 to 30% further by doing that than you thought you could the first time correct correct about I guess said I think about 20 about maybe 30% that's crazy so now think about that how we can do 20 30 40 50% more just by giving a command than we do in any given moment because we may not believe it we may not think we can we have limiting beliefs all the things that go into that yeah yeah so Julie let's talk a little bit about your coaching programs because I want my I want the listeners to get a lot of value I want them to learn to find you and we'll put you know your details in the comments below um like are you teaching are you group coaching are you what's the way that people can understand hey how can Julie help me um and like what's uh what's your program about right now those are great questions so I'm focusing on one to one right now I really thrive on teaching um I'm in a mastermind with Tony Robin and Dean gracioso and you know they talk about being a knowledge broker and I love teaching I was a school guidance counselor for a lot of years as well so one to one is my focus right now however I see some courses coming out of the coming out of me in the future I see a mastermind I really one of my Visions is to work with business owners on the power of the mind because we hold ourselves back so much and I'm guilty guilty guilty guilty and my gosh think about your 20 30% that you just showed us how much more could people do if they would rid themselves of their limiting beliefs and gain self-confidence and understand at a neurological level language Power of Words that we really can do and be more so I Envision a course I Envision a mastermind with business owners that's really where one of my passions is starting to go you know we grow at first I was like oh I just want to do one toone coaching and now I'm like oh no no I see a course I see a mastermind and I'm really passionate about working with business people because I am a business person I've been in businesses before and I can see where I held myself back with my own thoughts and not understanding how powerful my thought process was my actions my behaviors so that's where I see it going in the near future right now I'm focusing on one to one that is awesome so you're thinking about um obviously adding various group coachings and programs and stuff like that and uh that is absolutely super so um how long have you been with the Tony I have a couple quick questions about that how long have you been with um mentoring with the Tony Robbins um group it's been about it's been a couple months I took a couple of his he's very big on serving and adding absolutely and and I love that I'm all about that as well so I took a few of his ver virtual seminars and then he offered the opportunity to be in his Mastermind so I he had me hook line of singer and I've not looked back a minute so I'm doing that yes it's been a couple months you know on that note I always think it's interesting on with entrepreneurs and I have to say especially women women sometimes will not invest in themselves and men men are different and so there's no this is not a like old BL point the but this is like they know the value of I need a sales coach or I need this uh whatever a gym a fitness coach if you want to lose weight big muscles whatever it is so men have no problem with like that's what I want to do I know I need a coach I need a mentor right but women have an issue with it sometimes which is like how do we invest in ourselves how are you going to grow if you don't so I want I I I just want to like the last few minutes talk about how important that is and and you now you've got two different things that you've done you've gone out of your kudos for you man you've gone out of your way you've done a co-authored um with uh Les Brown okay that took time and money and it took a leap of faith yes right yeah and you're in Tony Robinson's Mastermind group that is serious money and time but you know what what what how are you how how are you feeling about that like you said hook lion Sinker I was done I was there yeah because you went all in yes I went all in and you know it's always to me it's tapping into our why and really knowing that and understanding it and feeling it because that to me is always our driving force and it's sort of like put your oxygen mask on first on the airplane instead of putting it on your children we have to take care of ourselves how can I serve if I'm not taking care of myself and being Full Throttle the best that I can bring and being bringing my best self forward and I'll be honest Kylie I've had some breakthroughs as old as I am because it's been a lifetime Journey I've had some breakthroughs with my course my Mastermind with Tony Robbins just on my own just listening and going through the process I'm like you are a child of God we are all children of God we're all born with talents and aspirations and dreams you know what are we doing to hold ourselves back and I think having that drive that understanding is super important for women as well as men but women are natural born caretakers yep yep yep so this is good so now I want to ask you something if you could go back right now you've had a bit of a breakthrough you've gone and and and that's I mean no matter what I don't care who you are you're gonna get into Tony Robin's Mastermind you're gonna have some breakthroughs okay if you don't you're not paying attention yeah 100 honestly you're not paying attention yes so I'm really really glad to say I mean my listeners if you're looking for somebody now she's co-hosted Les Brown she has been Tony Robbins Mastermind that is like unfire that's unfire you've done powerful powerful work and connections and tools and so what I think is I don't know what the number is but I do know that having a mentor and a coach the money that you spend on that will save you thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars later in your business life yes and if I can also add the money and also the emotional stamina and the mental strength and the knowledge based that are all super important for any entrepreneur and especially a life coach so those things combined are pivotal that's great that is awesome Julie thanks for sharing your time with us it's been very very valuable um what I'm going to do is we'll um link your um your um you know your connection apps and the way to people get a hold of you in the in the in the show comments um and I can't wait to see the book that comes out um and then you and I will I don't know maybe I'll come up to you where you're at because I know where you're at and we'll just have I love it thank you for having me the book is out it's it's actually out but it's hot off the press and I don't have my own link yet but I can I can hook people up with a copy if they're well it's right when you get the link we'll put it we'll we'll just reattach it to the L that'll be awesome but also um I think it's just so important to keep positive you've been a very positive part of my day thank you and I really appreciate you thank you Kylie thanks for having me thank you bye
