knowy Treasures of hisory of time all the Hand Works remain Dre Doctor Who season 3 ran between the 11th of September 1965 and the 16th of July 1966 at 45 episodes It's the longest season in Doctor Who history it featured 10 stories and the Jewel in its Crown is the dalac master plan now if you count trial of a Time is four stories rather than one then season 3 featured both the longest stories in the show's history the D master plan and the shortest the single episode mission to the unknown which arguably could be considered part of the D master plan confused yet season 3 opens up with the sadly mostly missing Galaxy 4 and amusingly it's four episodes long if I could choose to have five missing stories back Galaxy 4 would be one of them it's not amazing but it features a brilliant enemy alien race well they're not brilliant they're written as basic evil aliens and they're pretty stupid I'm not selling this am I I'll start again Galaxy 4 features the evil Draven a generic as all hell evil alien race bent on conquest and kicking the [ __ ] out of stuff but someone in production Verity Lambert decided they should be played by 1960s model type woman in mini skirts and the scripts weren't really altered to reflect the casting except had an insult or two about the mail davens so as a result we basically have a race of man-hating genocidal possibly lesbian go- go dancers and I [ __ ] love them on a deserted Planet the Tardis comes across a fight between the davens and the Ugly reals it's the usual don't judge a book by its cover lesson as the reals are proven to be nice and the Draven end up dead until they finally get Nam dropped by River Song in the Pandora opens and to stop me from ranting about the fact that they could have easily turned up in that episode it's not like their costumes and makeup would have been expensive I'll just go on to the next Story Mission to the unknown this is a single episode story if you don't count the shorts that were done in new whoo this is the shortest episode in Doctor Who history and it doesn't feature the doctor the Tardis or the companions instead we follow some space cops as they investigate DC Le Intergalactic evil U and try not to be turned into equally evil plants it was the 60s such things were common fears the dals have gathered some of the universe's greatest single appearance aliens together to team up and Conquer The Solar System how does that go well you'll have to wait because some genius decided to put the actual invasion of the solar system story after the next one a historical set in Troy the mythmakers this four-part story was completely wiped but like all stories in classic Doctor Who there exists a complete audio and attempts at recreation in various ways and it's one of the five stories that i' choose to return if I could only have five this is a treat for ancient Greece and ancient literature afficianados it's basically a retelling of The Iliad with the doctor who gets mistaken for Zeus Vicki leaves falling in love with a Trojan called troilus and being renamed cresa I trust some of you now know why I said it's a treat for ancient Greece and ancient literature afficianados joining the crew is the shortest running definite companion Katarina now there are debates over some characters on whether they're technical companions or not the usual rough definition goes something like this a person who helps the doctor and travels in the Tardis for more than one consecutive Story the thing is that doesn't cover some people who are considered companions for instance Shaw was the doctor's assistant all throughout season 7 but never once traveled in the Tardis and that definition of companion covers Adam from season one of new who he was inac and the long game so was Liz a companion was Adam I'm not giving definite answers except of [ __ ] course Liz was a companion she's [ __ ] great and Adam wasn't he was a toul what I'm saying is that there is a gray area about who's a companion and who's not in Doctor Who it doesn't often come up but it does exist and Katarina is the shortest lasting person on the definite 100% companion side of the Divide I say that because she joined the Tardis crew in episode four of the mythmakers and she was flying through space without a space H in episode four of the next story she lasted four 25 minute episodes Jesus the next story is the hug [ __ ] epic the delic master plan this is the point where the show grew a beard not a covering forus beard although the show is quite Camp I kick your head and beard of badassness not satisfied with killing a companion four episodes in there were 12 episodes overall it introduces Nicholas Courtney who would later become immortalized as the Brigadier as Brett Von who joins up for a few episodes and then gets killed it introduces the first maybe companion in Sarah Kingdom the most badass female character in the show's history and this show has featured a teen girl beating a doll mostly to death with a baseball bat but back to Sarah Kingdom she kicks out ass takes no [ __ ] and looks like she'll be more at home in The Avengers I wasn't talking about that Avengers but she does look like she could beat up black widow anyway guess what she dies nearly everyone in this story [ __ ] dies but a few are literally aged to death and turned to dust remember Indiana Jones in the Last Crusade Doctor Who did that to one of its heroes in the 60s Jesus they killed Katarina because they rode themselves into a corner with her they thought not an ancient Greek would be a good change of pace but then realized it would be a bit weird for the companion to literally think the doctor was God and to not understand really basic [ __ ] like what a key is personally I wish she lasted longer she was different which is usually good but I can understand by the killed her the doic master plan is long too long and it includes a bizarre Christmas special partway through where the doctor infamously wishes a went home a Merry Christmas incidentally happy Christmas to all of you at home all but a couple of the episodes are lost and the Feast of Steven the Christmas special is probably the most lost of all the missing episodes it was if memory serves the only missing episode that was never sent overseas for broadcast so unless someone's been sitting on an original copy or recorded it or someone goes into deep space to try and recapture the TV signal somehow the episode is gone forever the doic master plan is about the attempted invasion of the solar system apart from the dialects and the Never to be seen again Brigade the other V is mavic Chen who I only mention because the actor who plays him seems to be in both yellow face and black face at the same time it is the weird side effect of making him look like a Star Trek alien when he's supposed to be playing a human weird so after 12 episodes where people died other people died and some people were killed how about some levity sorry now we're going to be in historical France which of course means killing the massacre of St barthol Eve is the first story to feature the doctor having an exact double and if you think there's a story there no there's not it's just a guy that looks like the doctor the doctor just wanders off and William Harel plays an evil abbit for a couple of episodes this is a four parter and Steven gets wrapped up in the events leading to the massacre of the hugenots the French Protestants once they leave the French murder they land in 1960s London where they meet the new companion dodo Chaplet she's well named because her brain cells went extinct a long time ago she's pretty stupid most people seem to hate her with a level of intensity that I thought most same people left for Melanie Bush but I don't she's just happy silly and very stupid her first story is the four-part The Arc a Sci-Fi story set in the far future where the remnants of humanity are in an arc in space and they have a slave race called the monoids dodo had a cold which infected all the future humans and when the Tardis crew jumped forward 700 years they find out that enough humans were wiped out by the cold that the monoids turned the table and took over the ark finally makes it to their intended Colony planet and the moral of the story is if you were a slave and somehow defeated your Masters then you were going to end up the villain in a Bad Doctor Who story this one was pretty damn offensive and it's not much better than the next one the celestial toy maker it's four episodes long and on the surface the celestial toy maker is a surreal and fun story about how the Godlike Celestial toy maker captures the crew and forces them to play games for their lives then there's the fact that the toy maker in yellow face it's dressed like a mandarin the fact that Celestial used to be a slurry used for Chinese people and the fact that in scrutable evil manipulators has been a negative stereotype for Asian people for literally a hundred years at least the fact that the nword is used in eeny meeny miny mo is just the cherry on top of this gateau of racism and you know what else this is really [ __ ] boring it was nice to see Michael gof though next is the gunfighters another four parter and did attempt to do something new a musical while recounting the story of the gunfight at the okay Corral the doctor has developed a toach and so head to the nearest dentist who happens to be Doc Holiday then they're singing and by the 58th time they sing The Ballad of the last chanc Lin you were going to wish you were shot in the head because unlike most musicals this one only has one song repeated with variations oh joy I quite like the gunfighters and by quite like I mean I like it more than most people but godamn that song is repetitive at least the accents are [ __ ] hilarious long way from Dodge City ain't you Marshall reckon you know why I'm here your boys killed my kid brother Clinton well now there's two sides to a here to argue just to say that Wy and me will meet him at the okay Corral come Cent up the Savages comes next it's a Sci-Fi tale where an adelic race called the elders hide a dark secret they're [ __ ] awful to erace called the savages the elders drain their life force to maintain their society of course the doctor gets some of his drained and it begins to affect the Elder leader in ways he didn't expect and Steven decides to stay behind to try and help the two societies make peace because future English guy Powers the final story of season 3 is the war machines notable for a few things one it's the only story where the doctor is constantly called Doctor Who the villain a mega computer called Wan is convinced that's his name of course Wan could just be smart enough to break the fourth wall and read the end credits this story also set the groundwork for many of the modern-day stories it's set in the present not the rough present but the then of when it was made with all the pop cultur datedness that comes with it and it's set in London basically this story laid the blueprint for about half of Russell T A erer the actual war machines of the title are Killer Robots controlled by Wan yet another attempt to out doac the D and yet another failure this is basically an average episode of Adam adamant where they replaced him with an angry old man called who and if you don't know Adam adamant check out my Adam adamant reviews it's a [ __ ] great show plug this is also the story where dodo leaves in a flurry of no dignity she gets hypnotized partway through joins the villains briefly is released and then leaves the story halfway through to recover from the ordeal and is never seen again Jackie Lane's contract wasn't extended midstory and she doesn't doesn't even get a goodbye scene it's noteworthy but it's also [ __ ] tragic dodo deserved better even Mel got a goodbye scene though M didn't get an introduction scene but I'll get to her later the war machines also introduced Ben and Polly the first doctor's last companions on the second Doctor's first paully liked dodo as a fashionable young woman but with brain cells this time Ben's a workingclass sailor and is the honor of being the first proper mockney and the Tardis the 10th do saluted him daily season 3 is a mixed bag nothing in it is as good as the time medler of the Aztec but it does of Galaxy 4 and the DX master plan then we get two stories of unsettle racism back to back maybe the story to judge this season by is the gunfighters nearly equal parts good bad boring crap and accidentally hilarious join me next time for season 4 when the doctor becomes a new man when we'll see the last P historical for nearly 20 years years and for the first time the doctor's face will be in the opening credits me
