Good morning students, I am Mr. Ha. We will discover the special music language today. It is graphic score. These are the most common way to write music on paper.
We will use five line states to show high or low sound. We will use P, MP, MF, PP, this kind of word to present the dynamic. And also we will use different symbols to present different musical ideas.
For example, if we need a pause, we will write a fermata. If we want a sound which is getting louder, we will write a crescendo symbol. However, it is the only way to use traditional methods to tell people about the musical elements.
Do we have an other method to tell people about the pitch, high or low sound? The tempo, fast or slow? The duration, long or short? The dynamics, loud or quiet?
Do you feel boring to use the traditional methods to present music? Now I want to give you an alternative it is using graphic score we can use different shape colors length to tell people the musical idea is a way which a composer can compose a piece of music without using common musical notation however i think the most interesting thing is that graphic notation do not have absolute meaning of each symbol. In the other words, we have to guess the meaning of each symbol. Now let's take a look to example 1. The graphic score is relatively easy to understand.
The upper part is the music score and the lower part is the description. The composer states clearly the meaning. of each symbol. It is representing which sound. Okay?
However, there is something that the composer did not mention clearly. For example, the size of each symbol. And I guess a bigger size is representing louder sound.
A bigger heart shape is louder. A smaller heart shape is softer. And also The density, I guess that is telling us about the speed. So please take a look to example 2. There are many lines and dots in this graphic. For my understanding of this score, I believe that the length of each line is standing for the difference duration and the spacing of each dot is standing for the different speeds.
So, I guess the first line, the sound will be like this. And the second line, the sound will be like this. Okay? The third line, the sound will be like this. and the fourth line the sound like this let's take a look to example 3 in this case I think the straight line is standing for a long note and the position of those symbols is telling us the high or low pitch and the dropping curves line It's representing for a higher sound is falling.
The falling sound I think the sound may be like this. Something like that. Now I have a matching game for you. I prepared six different sounds for you. You have to match the sound to the specific graphic.
Each graphic will only be used once. Now, listen to sound 1. Sound 2 Sound 3 Sound 4. Sound 5. Sound 6. Now please listen to this excerpt. This music is composed by a famous composer, Beethoven. Based on the change of the sound in this music, please draw a graphic score, take a photo of your work and upload to Edmodo as an assignment.
So this is the end of this lesson. Goodbye and see you next week.
