Lecture Notes: Earth's Spheres

Introduction

  • Earth as a puzzle with four parts called "spheres."
  • Spheres include all components of Earth, from ocean fish to the air.
  • The four spheres are:
    • Geosphere
    • Biosphere
    • Hydrosphere
    • Atmosphere

Focus: Geosphere and Biosphere

Geosphere

  • Definition: "Geo" means "ground" (Greek origin).
  • Known as Earth's skeleton.
  • Consists of non-living elements like:
    • Rocks
    • Minerals
    • Landforms (volcanoes, canyons, beaches, mountains)
  • Geosphere is the base upon which other spheres exist.

Biosphere

  • Definition: "Bio" means "life" (Greek origin).
  • Comprised of living organisms.
  • Made up of biomes, which are regions with similar life forms and climates.
    • Types of biomes include deserts, forests, rainforests, grasslands, wetlands.

Example Scene Analysis

  • Scene: Forest meadow with birds, deer, mountain, stream.
  • Geosphere Elements:
    • Non-living
    • Rock, soil, mountain, stream bed.
  • Biosphere Elements:
    • Living organisms
    • Grass, birds, deer.

Conclusion

  • Understanding of how geosphere and biosphere interact within Earth's system.
  • Both spheres are interdependent and contribute to Earth's overall structure.

Personal Anecdote

  • Reference to finding a hairbrush, indicating a return to daily life tasks.
