Facial Treatment Skills and Devices 108E.3

Aug 6, 2025

Overview

This lecture covers the essential skills, draping methods, procedures, and device guidelines involved in performing facial treatments with various esthetic devices.

Facial Treatment Draping Guidelines

  • Cocoon wrap creates a secure, warm environment but may be too confining for some clients.
  • Layered treatment table setup offers more comfort, especially for larger clients or males.
  • Head wrap protects clientโ€™s hair and prevents product contamination.
  • Draping should consider disability, body size, pregnancy (often contraindicated), age, and comfort preferences like temperature.
  • Environmental factors such as table comfort, bolsters, room temperature, aromatherapy, music, and lighting impact client experience.

Facial Treatment Procedures

  • Standard facial steps: Pre-Cleanse, Analyze, Cleanse and Tone, Exfoliate, Treat, Massage, Mask, Protect.
  • Devices can be integrated at specific steps to enhance results and address individual skin needs.
  • Stand-alone treatments (microcurrent, LED) have unique protocols but may overlap with standard steps.

Facial Devices and Applications

  • Common devices: steamer, rotating brush, galvanic current, high frequency, cold/hot hammer, spray atomizer, vacuum suction, LED, microdermabrasion.
  • Each device has specific benefits (e.g. increased microcirculation, tissue tightening, hydration, reduced redness).
  • Devices are selected based on desired outcome and facial step.

Guidelines for Device Use

  • Galvanic: Desincrustation (emulsifies sebum, breaks down blockages), Iontophoresis (increases product absorption, tightens tissue).
  • High Frequency: Direct (stimulates surface), Indirect (warms tissue, increases sebum), Sparking (germicidal, heats skin).
  • Microcurrent: Use after cleansing and toning, avoid with Viennese massage.
  • LED: Always cover eyes and avoid looking directly at light.
  • Vacuum suction is used for massage step (improves hydration and reduces discomfort).

Key Terms & Definitions

  • Desincrustation โ€” Galvanic treatment breaking down pore blockages for deep cleansing.
  • Iontophoresis โ€” Galvanic method pushing water-soluble compounds into skin to enhance absorption.
  • Direct High Frequency โ€” Device contact directly on skin for surface stimulation.
  • Indirect High Frequency โ€” Massage performed while client holds electrode, warming and stimulating skin.
  • Sparking (Fulguration) โ€” Small electrode delivers germicidal spark to treat blemishes.
  • Microcurrent โ€” Low-level electrical device for tissue tightening and hydration.
  • LED (Light Emitting Diode) โ€” Device using light to improve microcirculation, reduce discoloration and inflammation.

Action Items / Next Steps

  • Review textbook pages 38โ€“52 for detailed protocols and charts.
  • Practice each facial step and proper draping methods.
  • Ensure safety and contraindication checks before device use.
  • Complete โ€œCheck What You Knowโ€ questions to reinforce understanding.
