Clarifying Measurement, Assessment, and Evaluation

We need to assess your students. How about we evaluate them? How can we measure their capabilities?

Measurement, assessment, and evaluation. Most of us use it interchangeably. Halos iisa lang naman ang ibig sabihin. Pero, as an EDOC student, dapat alam mo ang pinagkaiba-iba ng tatlong ito.

Welcome to Flip Channel and we're going to discuss how assessment, measurement, and evaluation are different from each other. With examples pa yan. Kaya huwag kayong bibitaw dahil pasisimplihin natin ang mga bagay-bagay. Plus, may bonus 10 questions pa ako at the end of this discussion. So, stay tuned!

What is measurement? I said earlier that assessment, measurement, and evaluation are usually replaced. But as an EDUC student, we should be particular in using these terms.

It's okay for those in other fields or professions, but as a teacher, you should know what their specific differences are. Let's start with measurement. Whenever we talk about measurement, It is a tool used to quantify one's ability or capability.

It is like assigning a numerical value to an individual's task. So, it means, in this measurement, we are using something. What is this something? Example of this are rubrics. We have holistic rubric and analytic rubric.

An analytic rubric is a bit complicated. It has criteria and a score. But the holistic rubric has a range and the whole is the grading. So an example of a measurement is using a rubric to score the student's task. For example, you made an essay and you will grade it.

How will you grade it? You need a measurement. Clear?

Number two, let's go to assessment. Ano naman to? Assessment refers to the gathering of information in order to determine if the students really get what you wanted to tell them. It is like a process of gathering information about your students'capabilities, performance, or even knowledge.

This also involves the activities that you do inside the classroom. So what are the examples of assessment? Well, we have...

quizzes, recitation, activities like drills, quiz B, and games, all of those are part of the assessment. When we call it assessment, these are the things you do in the classroom to measure if the child really learned something. So speaking of assessment, we have two types of assessment. We have the summative assessment and the formative assessment.

The formative assessment, ito yung parang... check-in while learning. So, habang nagtuturo ka in the process of teaching your students, you are also starting to look kung nagigets ba nila yung tinuturo mo.

Nasa proseso ka pa lang ng pagtuturo, pero tinitingnan mo na kung nagigets pa nila. That is formative assessment. What are the examples of formative assessment? Recitation, seat work, quizzes.

Now, how about the summative assessment? From the word itself, sum. summation sabihin summary na ng lahat ng mga natutunan nila. Ginagawa to at the end of the quarter or at the end of the semester.

The examples of summative assessment are final examinations and even yung mga quarter examinations. Ito yung mga final requirement na hinihingi ni teacher para makita niya kung at the end of the day sa lahat ng mga instructions na itinuro niya, meron ka bang natutunan. Okay?

So that's the difference between summative and formative assessment. Last but not the least will be the evaluation. This is where we get confused most of the time.

Is assessment and evaluation really the same? Well, I'll tell you this. No, they are not the same.

Assessment is the activities that you do to gather information. Evaluation is like your judgment. Okay?

This is what you will judge the students. through the measurement that you use, if it has increased or decreased in your class. So here you will see if the activities, the programs that you did for the students are effective. Not only for the student, but also the program that you did, you will evaluate if it is really effective.

Evaluation has a broader scope than assessment. It's like looking at the bigger picture. So what are the examples of evaluation?

I told you earlier that it's wide. So for example, in your school, you have a reading program. And in that reading program, you wanted to see if it's effective or not. So of course, you will do it for the student, the activities, whatever assessment you will make for the student. And then at the end of the day, you will look if that program is effective or not.

It's not just staying inside the classroom. but overall, it's like the curriculum itself that he's looking at. Second example, the student performance evaluation. We usually do this at the end of the semester. So you look at the student's progress, you see his scores from first grading up to fourth grading, then you look at whether my student has improved or not.

That is what you call as evaluation. Let's simplify the things more so you can see more clearly. pagkakaiba-iba.

Meron akong sitwasyon dito. Ako, yung teacher nyo, si Miss Jimenez. Tapos, gusto ko yung final requirement niya sa akin will be speech choir.

So, a speech choir is my assessment. Ayun yung activity na ipapagawa ko. Tapos, syempre, magbibigay ako ng rubrik kung paano ko kayo ge-gradan.

And that is where the measurement comes. Para makita ko kung na-achieve nyo ba yung gusto kong mangyari. So I asked them to practice and I looked at their work and I gave feedback on what they noticed, what they can improve, and what is good.

That is what you call a formative assessment because students are already looking at the process. So that's also assessment when you give feedback. Now, at the end, they will present it.

That's the time that I will tell you if you get a high score or a low score. with your project. That is where I will tell if you passed or failed for that project and that is called an evaluation. I already evaluated using the measurement and using the assessment if you passed or failed the project. Okay, so to sum it up, assessment is a way to gather information.

Evaluation is to measure the effectiveness and measurement is to actually use the data. a tool in order to quantify one's performance. So I hope this clarifies things and to see kung may natutunan ba kayo o wala dito sa video ko na to, I have prepared you 10 item questions that will be linked in the comment section and let's see in my next video. I hope this helps.
