Transforming Cartoons into Realistic Images

Pop quiz! One of these pictures is real. What? AI generated.

Can you tell the difference? I don't know. I don't know. I won't know unless you comment, so do that, I guess, and I'll tell you the real answer at the end of the video.

Retention. Hello, everyone. Welcome back.

My name is Pat, and I make AI videos on the internet and videos about how I make my AI videos. Today, I'm going to share with you a technique that I've kind of developed for turning cartoon characters into their live action. realistic looking counterparts.

So to start with we are inside of Midjourney Alpha. It works the exact same as the Discord version of Midjourney but if you generate a hundred images or more they allow you into the Alpha. I find that Midjourney gives you the best quality images the most consistently. When it comes to generating a cartoon character as a real person it's pretty simple like most things.

It's just a matter of putting different pieces of simple information together. to get your image. So let's say we want an image of a Homer Simpson. Let's go a classic Homer Simpson. And all we do is type that name in there.

We're going to make sure our aspect ratio is filmic looking. And then there's all sorts of other things we can adjust, but we're not going to worry about that for now. Live action on a couch.

I'm going to throw in some negative prompts. That's what that command means. And those are just some things I throw in there when I'm trying to specifically avoid cartoony type stuff.

I'm also going to call out a specific film stock just to make sure that it's generating an image that looks specifically like a camera image that is used to film real things. Alright, so as we can clearly see, Midjourney took the spirit of what we are trying to get it to do and took it about halfway and then ran the rest of the way. with that traditional character animation. So that's pretty cool, that's how you get like a Pixar-looking type of thing, but we don't want Pixar, we want to go full photorealistic, what does Homer Simpson look like in the real world? So here's what we're going to do instead, we are not going to say Homer Simpson, because it associates this character so strongly with the yellow skin and the very specific things that are animated that I don't think we're going to have that easy of a time.

getting away from that. So we're gonna have to get creative with this. So rather than saying Homer Simpson, we're going to describe Homer Simpson without actually saying Homer Simpson. So we're gonna go, uh, balding, and learn to spell shadow correctly.

So now we're not calling for a cartoon character that it doesn't know how to make live action. We're just describing that cartoon character as if it's a new character, but we secretly know deep down that this is going to be Homer Simpson. So let us see what Midjourney delivers. So... It gave us what we asked for, but I don't know about you.

These do not scream Homer Simpson to me. I think we need to work on this a little bit harder. So what we're going to do, we're actually going to add a character reference.

And here we go. We've got homie popping into the bush. So now that we have a reference image and we've got all this business going on, now we're going to see what it does for us. All right.

These are becoming a lot more realistic, a lot more closer. to what we actually want. You can see it actually took our image and used it as an input to reference what it was generating and I think we got pretty close in a few different instances.

I did get my wires crossed as you probably picked up on. I asked to depict him sitting on a couch but then I also gave it the image of him disappearing into that hedge. So we got a little mishmash of scenery going on but we got pretty close I think. And you know we could do this a few different times. and take our pic of real life Homer Simpson and really dial in that character.

Alright, here we go. We have our pic of the litter. We could pick any one of these guys to be our live action Homer Simpson.

We see we started off cartoon but 3D, then we got it to be realistic but not too similar to the cartoon, and then once we provided that character reference, I'm ignoring the leaves, I'm just rolling with it, but once we provided that character reference, We really started to dial in to our Homer Simpson in real life character. I think this guy looks pretty good. If he had less hair, this guy's pretty good. But you can see, just doing this a bunch of times, you'll land on something that you can absolutely work with. And you know what?

As a bonus, let me show you something. So let's say we want this to be our live action Homer Simpson. We want it to be all the way with him hiding inside of that bush. We're going to go over here. to vary region and you'll see that mid journey gives you a few different options for in painting this is just modifying select regions of your image without modifying the rest of it so you have the option for like a square here where you can just select blocks of different things that you want to retry but let's say we want to retry everything except for this part of the bush and homer's face here we can also take our lasso tool And take out some different chunks of things.

I mean, you don't need to be too terribly precise with this. It knows what it's doing, and we just gotta tell it, hey, do this again. And now all we do is we're gonna do that, and it's gonna repaint everything that we have highlighted in this gray, and it's not gonna touch what we have not highlighted. And as you can see, we got some pretty okay results.

Obviously, obviously, obviously, if we wanted to keep trying this we would re-roll it and use some of the same techniques over and over again until we eventually got what we wanted. But, pretty far cry from sitting on the couch, and a very far cry from that cartoon that we all know and love. Now, if you wanted to make a movie with this guy, you would simply mix and match it with the techniques I've talked about in my previous tutorial videos. But, just for fun here, we're gonna bring...

Homer to life in Pika Labs, because that's usually what I wind up doing, and it's a pretty fun process. It's kind of like magic. Those are always pretty amusing. They seldom get it right, so you gotta generate a lot and make your selections. It is Homer, though, so maybe his eyes just don't work that good.

That one could be pretty okay. Definitely gets a little blurry, but you get the idea. And there we go, we have our own AI video of someone who could... arguably be a live-action version of Homer Simpson hiding in the bushes. I'll get you sticking around to the very end of the video and definitely not skipping ahead.

I'm proud of you. Alright, you want to know the answer. The real image is this one, the fake one, that one. If you got it right, let me know how you figured it out. If you got any questions about that business, let me know and I'll try to answer them.

Alright, take it easy guys. See you next time.
