How do you start the new semester right?

Let us begin, kapatid, with the presumption that you have been anxious before. If this is your first semester in law school, let me tell you, kapatid, up front, that all of the horror stories you have heard from whatever source have some modicum of truth. They are based on actual stories of actual experiences of actual persons or actual classmates who have been through some small version of the horror story.

Kung may nakapagkwento sa'yo kapatid na may pinalabas sa klase dahil wala siyang alam, let me tell you that that is true. To this day, we hear the voices of our professors in our heads.

If you are now in your second year or third year or by some minor miracle of God you are now on your final year in law school, know and understand that you have been anxious before. If you are afraid of the coming semester because of your professors, know and understand kapatid, that But you have been afraid before.

In the truly olden days, we had one professor who was a towering hulk of a man. Students in the corridors would park like the Red Sea when he would pass by.

All of us fell silent by his presence alone. We were deathly afraid of him because he looked like God's vengeance.

They say where he walks, the grass never grows. Such was our fear of him. During our class, we grew all the more terrified of him.

Two by two, our class would dwindle. He would suggest to the two worst performers in class to drop his subject. His suggestion felt more like a command than a suggestion. We were so afraid of him that we complied, such that on the day of the final exam, only of us remained.

The one time we saw him smile was in his casket because he died peacefully. As much as we were afraid of this professor, we showed up. We told ourselves that make it or not, ilalaban na namin.

Hindi mo ito first time.

You are not the same person as you were last year. You are not necessarily more skillful in reading and understanding the law. You are not necessarily a better learner of the law. But you are not the same person as you were last year.

In the here and in the now, you are an incrementally better iteration of yourself. of the person you were last year. You are now a better version.

Full stop. Finally, know and understand that you have been here before. Your professors, your subjects, and your classmates may not necessarily be the same.

But know and understand, kapatid, that you have been here before. You have been here before.

Ikaw gayto mayunan. 1. The same measure of the earth that you are standing on today, in the midst of your fear that you will fall to your professor who seems to be angry with you, in your fears where the hand of God will take your hand. ng aral mo ay burado.

He has called you by name to come and be a lawyer for His people. He has called you by name so that one day, someday, you can put a child molester behind bars and make the world a safer place.

He called you by name. So that one day, someday, you too will bear witness and testimony to His love and faithfulness. kahit ramdam mong hindi ka karapat dapat.

He has called you by name and you have answered. So tonight, kapatid, let this be our declaration. God has not abandoned you in the past year. God was with you last semester and today I declare He will be with you in this one. Magtiwala ka lamang sa Kanya.

Father, I pray for every single person who is praying with me right now. We lift up to you all of our doubts, our fears, all of our insecurities, anxieties of my brother, my sister, my friend, whom I love so dearly. We lift up to you in surrender everything we will say, think, and do during the coming semester.

You have provided for us before and you will remain faithful during this semester and every semester henceforth until my brother, my sister, my friend says the words that will forever bind us together as we bring justice where there is none.
