Exam Structure

Sections & Timing

1. Section 1: Multiple-Choice

   • Timing: 60 minutes.
   • Questions: 45 multiple choice questions.
     • Reading Portion: 2 passages, 23-25 questions.
     • Writing Portion: 3 passages, 20-22 questions.
   • Weight: 45% of the exam.

2. Section 2: Free Response

   • Timing: 2 hours and 15 minutes.
   • Questions: 3 free response essays.
     • Synthesis Essay
     • Rhetorical Analysis Essay
     • Argument Essay
   • Weight: 55% of the exam.

Types of Questions

Multiple-Choice

• Involves reading nonfiction passages.
• Focuses on rhetorical devices, figures of speech, and intended purposes under time constraints.
• Includes student-produced essays.

Free Response

• Synthesis Essay: Requires creating a response using at least three of six/seven accompanying sources.
• Rhetorical Analysis Essay: Analyze techniques used by an author.
• Argument Essay: Argue a position based on personal knowledge or other sources.

Scoring

• Scores range from 1 to 5.
• College credits typically require a score of 4 or 5, but a 3 might suffice for some.
• Score distribution from May 2022:
  • Score 5: 10.4% of test-takers
  • Score 4: 21.1%
  • Score 3: 24.2%
  • Score 2: 29.8%
  • Score 1: 14.5%
