alright welcome to chemistry guys this is your first flipped video of the year it is safety and rules of the lab try to keep the videos about seven minutes maybe even about ten minutes but try to keep it less than that okay so let's get started lab safety rules you guys are pretty familiar with this but just so you know I did take this video this PowerPoint from the internet and here's some of the places where it came from all right safety symbols first thing you need to do is know your safety symbols okay so as I'm going through this video we're doing this one in class because I want you to take notes on it the way you would take notes on a flips video okay so basically if I highlight anything underline anything right anything you want to write it down in your notes I'm going to walk you through this step-by-step in class okay so know your safety symbols they appear in your laboratory activities sometimes they will alert you for possible dangers and they will remind you to work carefully so use your head okay guys don't use good judgment don't don't play around follow all my instructions okay notify me immediately if there's anything unsafe that's happening or if there's an accident I have had in the past where people won't tell me that they've got cut and then parents are calling me and saying why did my kid get cut okay there was a horseplay incident last year did it I didn't know about it I and it turned out wasn't a horseplay and said it was actually something else so please let me know what's going on in the lab okay read your lab instructions ahead of time I want you to underline that one or actually write that one down because this is a big one a lot of kids don't read the instructions and then they mess up everything and then they ask me - what's what went wrong and I have to redo the lab again okay and sometimes we don't have enough of materials okay always follow lab procedures exactly okay never do an unauthorized experiment okay this is a big one in my class also write that down as well don't ever do anything it's not on the instructions don't mix chemicals okay all right now let's get back into safety what you should know protect your eyes and I will require you to work safety goggles at all times so wear your safety goggles when working with chemicals flames or heating devices okay one other one I want to add on here class so if you have glass you will wear your safety goggles okay and if we have any anything that's gonna fly around okay if you wear contact lenses just let me know give me a heads-up because sometimes they can burn to your eyes okay our eye wash station is in case of emergency get something your eye that you should wash your flush your eyes 15 minutes okay so you're gonna flush for 15 minutes okay and then you're gonna notify me hopefully somebody in the class has notified me and be in and just rushed over to the eye wash okay but 15 minutes is the key here all right this is our shower okay keep your hair tied back ladies and gentlemen if you have very long hair keep your hair tied back I will require this one in class so write that down oops I would I don't know what that did okay do not wear loose clothing that can catch on fire okay this right here don't do it please now I will let you know when labs are but where that completely covers your foot is required so all right no flip-flops okay all right hand safety if something spills on your hands or if you get something on your hands again rinse with water for 15 minutes okay wash your hands after every lab this is important to me because I had a student that did not wash his hands he went and touched his eye we had to go to the eye wash for 15 minutes there was just enough and we didn't have a lot on there but it was just enough to start burning his eyes okay handle glassware sharp tools and heating containers carefully alright protect your hands protect yourself ARP objects we probably won't be using sharp objects I'm gonna just skip through this one but if we do happen to have any razor blades hold the blade down okay notify your teacher if you get cut that's and that includes okay here's this one broken glass and sharp objects do not go in the trash can okay I have had things break in my class so what you want to do is tell me and I will clean it up so another one teacher will clean up the broken glass okay Electrical Safety believe it or not I have to go over this because I had a student who tried to put paper clips inside the wall sockets and try to burn them out so please do not do any of that stuff I think y'all are smarter than that alright physical safety handle equipment carefully do not place cording or somewhere someone can trip okay this is another one here physical safety I'm gonna add on to here no backpacks or purses okay etc in the lab please it is a safety violation your bags don't need to be on your back they don't need to be in your front they need to be at your desks okay so no backpacks okay push all stools out of the way I have tripped over them before keep books picked up out of what we don't have walking Isles back there all your books and stuff unless I tell you to go to the lab stays outside of the lab okay all right heating safety we will be using heating devices again tie your hair back no loose clothing never look into the cane okay this is a good one never look into the container as you are heating it it can explode or it can bubble up and it can splatter a good another good one I do these symbols like a circle or I put on a stroke I want you to write it down never point the end of a test tube being heated at yourself or others I will demonstrate this in class or I did yesterday never heat in a closed container okay that's a good one also why because they could get some some chemicals getting it too hot and they will explode okay again here's some of your safety symbols that we will see in class just keep those in mind alright some more heating safety never leave a heat source unattended okay there should be about four of you there and that's pretty good but I hopefully you know that one he did metal glass and all that good stuff looks just like it does when it's cool so don't touch it I don't care don't try to put your fingers on it don't touch it do not place hot glassware on the desks directly okay I like that one because it will ruin our tables sometimes it will stick to the table so let's don't do that alright chemical safety read all labels twice before moving a chemical from a container use only use the type of type and amount of chemical instructed to use that's a good one too I will probably have everything for you but just kind of keep in mind that if I don't make sure you'll eat read the labels carefully that I've placed on them or that are on them already no okay I believe it or not people do try this never touch taste or smell a chemical unless the teacher tells you to oh and I like this one I have a lot of students to say why did it what did it what would happen if I mix these never mix chemicals unless I tell you it's okay to do so all right excuse me transfer chemical carefully keep lids on chemicals when containers are not in use if it's a pot if it's possible when diluting an acid pour acid into water consider all chemicals dangerous okay that includes vinegar guys because vinegar can burn your eyes it doesn't feel good when it's in there so we're gonna wear goggles for every chemical that we have okay animal safety I'm not going to cover just if we ever have an animal which we probably would never we'll just treat it with respect okay it was a live specimen it gave its life for education plant safety again weren't probably not gonna use plants but here's some things you should never do do not enter my storeroom without permission so the prep room is off limits unless I tell you it's okay to go in there take any chemicals from lab or storeroom do not do that okay Tut do not touch any equipment chemicals or other materials and trucks until instructed to do so I don't care what it is do not touch it okay unless I tell you it's okay all right this is a big one for me this is the one I'd like my biggest pet peeve right here do not eat or drink in the lab unless it is a lab that we are using food which we do and I tell you it's okay however if anything touches the table touches and equipment it is not to be consumed use lab glassware to eat and/or do not use any lab glassware to eat or drink out of which hopefully you know not to do that never engage in these three things right here I've had all of this happen in my classroom and I have kicked you out of the lab or kicked people out of the lab for it please do not have any practical jokes horseplay or roughhousing okay in case of an emergency we're going to go over these things we have we do have a fire blanket a shower I wash a tiny little first-aid kit fire extinguisher okay biggest thing here is if you spill something if something happens please please please get the teacher get me come see me okay all right let's see remember to stay at your workstation this one here I am gonna I do not like you visiting other stations unless I tell you it's okay stay with your group you will change groups some other time you'll be with your friends okay maintain a clean work area it is your responsibility not anyone elses to clean up your work area I will not dismiss you unless it is clean read and follow all in directions report any spills and incidents and stuff clean and put away all equipment at the end of the lab period where I ask you to so basically if you see it that way see it one way it should end that way when you leave waste products I will tell you how to dispose of them so just follow just instructions all right so let's do it right okay all right well this was your first video I went through it pretty fast I'm gonna show you in class how to how I want your notes to look so I will see you in class guys
