Plantar Fasciitis: Overview and Management

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Common Foot Problem: Causes pain in the heel.
  • Anatomy: The plantar fascia or arch tendon is a broad, thick band of tissue running from under the heel to the front of the foot.

Symptoms

  • Location of Pain: Front and inside of the heel, may radiate into the arch.
  • Timing of Pain: Worse in the morning due to overnight tightening; may decrease with movement, but often returns later in the day.

Causes

  • Overuse: Excessive use of the foot can lead to stress on the plantar fascia.
  • Tight Calf Muscles: Contributing factor to increased tension.
  • Overpronation: Excessive inward rolling of the foot.

Treatment Strategies

  • Rest and Cold Therapy: To reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Correction of Biomechanics: Use of orthotic inserts for foot support.
  • Stretching: Essential to alleviate tension in the plantar fascia.
  • Plantar Fasciitis Night Splint: A product to maintain a stretch on the foot.
  • Sports Massage: Helps to reduce pain and tension.
  • Taping Technique: Supports the arch during healing.

Advanced Medical Interventions

  • Corticosteroid Injection: Prescribed by a doctor if symptoms persist.
  • Surgery: Considered as a last resort.
