hello and welcome to episode 2 of the review and recap series for the ocr history b history around us study on hinley hall now the first time period that i said that you needed to know in the previous video was prior to 1740. throughout the course of this video we're going to be looking at the physical features the people and the purpose of hindley manor prior to 1740. originally hillary hall wasn't actually a hall it was a manor house and its first recording is in the doomsday book in the 11th century from the 11th to the 18th century we know very little about himly manor and that's because there's very little information kept on how the building and the site actually changed in terms of the physical features what we do know is that actually himmley manor was one of several manor houses in the area of dudley collectively these manor houses were known as castlery we also know that henry manner stood next to a medieval church and village in the himalay area the manor house itself was in a very central position in the dudley area with coal mines and steel works surrounding it we know that the manor house was surrounded by a moat we know that to get across the moat there was a drawbridge for entry and we know that on top of the manor house there was a turret which aided for defense these three features on the right hand side are all very defensive features and again we'll talk about that in a little bit more detail in the purpose section of this video here is um one of the earliest recorded images that we have of henley manor house and you can see lots of the physical features that i've just mentioned you can see that himley village and the church is surrounding the estate itself you can see the moat that surrounds the main building the manor house itself you can see the drawbridge that was used for entry and to stop attackers getting into it and you can also see the turret sticking out the top of the manor house now this is not a turret that we might uh think of today when we talk about things like machine gun turrets it's not that don't forget this is prior to 1740. turrets at this time offered a great vantage point um so they could scope out the local area and so that they could use them in times of attack what about the people then that used hemly manner prior to 1740 well for over four centuries it served as the home of the lords and the earls of dudley their knights and their families one of the most famous people to have used hindi mana prior to 1740 was a man called dudley now because of the central position of hindi manor it meant that he was able to experiment in smelting iron ore with coal in the 1600s making him very wealthy in 1628 the heiress to the dudley estate a woman called francis sutton married a man called humble ward now humble ward was an incredibly powerful and well connected man he was the son of a jeweler and goldsmith to the court of king charles the first as a result of this marriage the ward family inherited the title lords of dudley and make himmly manor one of their homes perhaps most famously of all in 1645 right at the end of the english civil war king charles the first and his men the royalists encamped on the grounds of himmley manor on his way to defeat at the battle of naysby in the english civil war this is a very significant event because like i said it serves um it serves to prove that hindi mana was involved quite significantly towards the end of the english civil war so what was the purpose of chimney manor prior to 1740 well because the dudley's owned many homes including dudley castle it serves as one of their places of residence himley manor doesn't become their main home until 1646 and the only reason that himly mana becomes their main home at this time is because dudley castle the place that they were living at before was very badly damaged by the parliamentarians during the english civil war so in 1646 hinley manor becomes their main place of residence their home you need to learn that phrase main place of residence additionally though lots of the physical features that we've mentioned um serve as defensive features because hemly mana was a very large manor house at the time it must also have been capable of defense from attack because this is a time when there is lots of political change and lots of war that brings us to the end of our prior to 1740 period you can see that it's a relatively short period in terms of the knowledge that you need to know and that's simply because there aren't many changes and we don't have lots of information on it on the left hand side are a series of ten quiz questions that you can have a go at now feel free to pause the video and then unpause it again when you would like to go over each of the answers okay hopefully you've had a chance to have a go at those ten quiz questions i'll really quickly go through each of the answers now what is your chosen site well i've already said that you need to know your chosen site is himmly hall nowhere on the paper will it mention hindi hall it will just say your site you need to know that that's hindi hall notice how i have capitalized both of those letters spelling and grammar matters the original site was not actually a hall it was a manor house hemley manor stood next to a medieval church and village known as himalay the body of water surrounding it was a moat and the other defensive features were the drawbridge and the turret doug dudley was the man who carried out the 17th century experiments with iron and coal francis sutton was the woman that humble ward married king charles the first used the site for his troops to encamp on the grounds on his way to defeat the battle of nasby however the main purpose of hymnly manor at this time is a place of residence for the ward family it's a home and finally when did the lords of dudley make it their main home well that's after dudley castle in 1646 is very badly damaged by the parliamentarians during the english civil war i strongly suggest that if you've got any of those questions right you repeat the quiz questions until you feel confident answering all 10 of those thank you for watching the second episode of the history around us review and recap series in the next video we're going to look at the next time period which is 1740-1850
