Lecture Notes: The Respiratory Tract

Introduction

  • Presenter: Dr. Mike
  • Topic: Parts of the respiratory tract and the pathway of air from the atmosphere to the lungs.

Conducting Pathways of Air

  • Purpose: To understand the anatomical structures air moves through during respiration.

Pathway of Inspired Air

  1. Nasal Cavity
    • First entry point for inspired air.
  2. Back of the Throat (Pharynx)
    • Comprised of three parts:
      • Nasopharynx: Located posterior to the nasal cavity.
      • Oropharynx: Located behind the oral cavity.
      • Laryngopharynx: Area near the larynx.

Alternative Pathway

  • Oral Cavity
    • Air can also be inspired through the mouth.

Upper Respiratory Tract

  • Components:
    • Nasal cavity
    • Pharynx (nasopharynx, oropharynx, laryngopharynx)
    • Larynx
  • Clinical Note:
    • Upper respiratory tract infections affect these areas.

Lower Respiratory Tract

  1. Trachea
    • Air passes through after the larynx.
  2. Bifurcation
    • Trachea splits into two main bronchi (left and right), resembling tree stems.
  • Components:
    • Main stem bronchi (right and left)
  • Clinical Note:
    • Lower respiratory tract infections involve these areas.
