Lecture Notes: AutoCAD Layer Command (Part 2)

Introduction

  • Instructor: Randy Dobson
  • Location: Houston, Texas
  • Purpose: Deepen understanding of AutoCAD layer command; continuation from first video.

Line Types and Layers

  • Line Types:
    • Center line, dash line, fan lines (long line with two short dashes), zigzag, etc.
    • Correct Approach: Create a layer for each line type.
    • Incorrect Approach: Hard change line types (discussed in advanced classes).

Layer Properties

  • Loading Line Types:
    • Access via layer properties.
    • Load additional line types as needed.
    • Example: Circle line type can be changed to dashed.
  • Setting Line Types by Layer:
    • Ensure line types are set by layer to allow easy changes.
    • Avoid hard changes for flexibility in editing.

Practical Example

  • Change lines to dashed while ensuring they are set "by layer".
  • Demonstration of creating new layers (e.g., phantom) and setting line types.

Non-Plot Layers

  • Purpose: Items included for reference but not plotting.
  • Example: Notes layer to indicate drawing rotations.
  • Process: Use layer properties to set "no plot" option.
  • Lock Feature:
    • Prevents editing (movement, erasing) of locked items.
    • Indicates locked status with visual cues.

Def Points Layer

  • Definition: Automatically created with dimensions.
  • Characteristic: Items on def points layer never print.

Advanced Layer Management

  • Creating New Layers:
    • Examples: Storm text, sanitary text, table text.
    • Use groups and filters to organize layers.
  • Groups:
    • Organize layers (e.g., original layers, used layers) for easy access.
    • Drag and drop layers into groups using control key.
  • Filters:
    • Automatically sort layers based on criteria (e.g., text in name, color).
    • Example: Create a filter for all red layers or text layers.

Importance of Organization

  • Stress on importance of organized layers for efficient editing.
  • Comparison with organizing receipts for taxes: organized approach saves time.

Conclusion

  • Emphasis on correct layer management without shortcuts.
  • Encouragement to remain organized for future ease of use.
