CertBros Lecture: Introduction to Computer Networks

Definition of a Computer Network

  • Network: A group/system of interconnected people or things.
  • Computer Network: A system where more than one computer is interconnected.
    • Traditionally includes desktop computers, servers, printers.
    • Modern networks also include smart devices (mobile phones, tablets, security cameras, smart lights).

Basic Network Components

  • Switch: Connects devices within the same network.
  • Router: Connects networks to each other.
  • Wireless Access Point: Allows wireless devices to connect to the network.
  • Devices: Desktop computers, mobile phones, etc.

Types of Networks

Local Area Network (LAN)

  • Network in a single area.
  • Connects to the outside world via a wall socket installed by an Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Wide Area Network (WAN)

  • Connects separate LANs together.
  • Example: The Internet.
  • Businesses may have private WANs for connecting multiple sites.

Business Network Example

  • Office Computers: Plug into wall/floor sockets.
  • Wiring Closet: Centralized room for network connections, also known as patch or server room.
  • Switches: Devices in the wiring closet mounted onto racks.
  • Multiple Wiring Closets: May exist in larger buildings and connect via floor or ceiling cables.

Mobile Networks

  • Smartphones: Connect to the internet via 3G, 4G, 5G.
  • Cell Towers: Provide wireless network access; proximity affects connection quality.

Importance of Networks

  • Resource Sharing: Share resources like printers and files.
  • Communication: Enables email, messaging, and internet searches.
  • Internet: Global network offering a wealth of information and services (e.g., email, VoIP, YouTube).

Conclusion

  • Networking has revolutionized global connectivity and resource sharing.
  • Continuous learning in networking is essential, as it evolves.
