Overview of Al Kamil Power Company

  • Established: 2001 as an Omani private joint-stock company.
  • Current status: Converted to a public joint-stock company on 22nd September 2004.
  • Location: Eastern region of Oman.
  • Power plant capacity: 369 megawatts.

Company Structure

  • Share capital: 65% by NG group, 35% by public investors.
  • Commercial operations: Plant began operating in 2003.
  • Power Purchase Agreement (PPA): 15-year contract to supply 280 megawatts to the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company.

Gas Turbine Specifications

  • Turbine model: General Electric Frame 9 gas turbines (PG 9171E).
  • Operational modes: Open cycle configuration; can be converted to closed cycle if needed.
  • Fuel types: Natural gas and light fuel oil (less than 1% sulfur).
  • Gas supply: 12-inch pipeline from the 48-inch Saih Rawl pipeline.
  • Fuel transportation: Light fuel oil transported by road tankers.

Power Generation System

  • Turbine generators: Three GE Frame 9 gas turbine generators, each 123 megawatts.
  • Generator specifications: Made by Austin, air-cooled, 121.25 MVA, 15,000 volts, 3000 rpm.
  • Step-up transformer: Manufactured by Hyundai with rated capacity of 120 MVA, rated voltage 132/15 kV.
  • Auxiliary transformers: Three sets reducing voltage from 15 kV to 6.6 kV.

Gas Treatment and Preparation System

  • Subsystems: Five subsystems including:
    • Inlet ESD skid.
    • Inlet separator filters Skid A and B.
    • Metering skid.
    • Water bath heater Skid A and B.
    • Pressure reducing skid.

Light Fuel Oil System

  • Components: Four subsystems including:
    • Diesel oil unloading pumps.
    • Diesel oil storage tanks (2 x 6588 cubic meters).
    • Diesel oil transfer pumps.
    • Diesel fire transfer pumps.

Water Systems

  • Raw water system: Discharge and storage for service and potable water.
  • Firewater system:
    • One firewater storage tank (848 cubic meters).
    • Two firewater pumps (one with AC motor and the other with diesel motor).
    • One jockey pump.

Compressed Air System

  • Components: One instrument air compressor and one service air compressor, with membrane dryer and air receiver tank.
  • Compressor type: Z Atlas Copco, oil-free, maximum working pressure 8.6 bar.

Black Start Generator

  • Specifications: 3200 kW, Seal A 18 V200 engine coupled with AB 710 MR04 generator.
  • Operating hours: 978.4 hours.

Electrical System

  • Components:
    • 6.6 kV switchgear.
    • General purpose MCC 0.415 kV.
    • Three sets of GTMCC 0.415 kV (one for each GT).
  • UPS and DC system:
    • Good-manufactured UPS system with 60 kVA capacity, 230 Volts AC with a 220 Volt DC battery rack with 178 cells.
    • Backup power for 5 hours.

Maintenance and Operations

  • Equipped with modern equipment: General Electric technology.
  • Long-term service agreement (LTSA): All major failures handled through OEM GE from planned COD date until 2017.
  • Types of inspections:
    • Fire and start inspection (FFS).
    • Assumed fired hours (FFH).
    • Hot gas path inspection (HGP).
    • Major inspection (ME).
  • Last major inspection: Conducted around 2011 to 2012 at 52,000 FFH.
  • Latest operational data: As of 31 December 2021, post ME and last inspection.
