Guide to Installing SSDs in PCs
Aug 22, 2024
Installing SSDs: M.2 and 2.5-inch SATA SSDs
Introduction
SSDs are essential for PC builds.
Focus of this presentation is on installation of M.2 and 2.5-inch SATA SSDs.
Sponsored by SK hynix, a leading memory manufacturer.
About SK hynix
Developed the world's first 128-layer NAND-based consumer SSD.
2nd largest memory manufacturer globally.
Known for performance, affordability, power efficiency, and 5-year warranties.
Recommended products: Gold P31 and S31.
Installing M.2 NVMe SSD
Preparation
Find the M.2 slot on the motherboard:
Typically 1 inch wide, protruding about 1/4 inch.
Common locations: below CPU or near PCIe slots.
Consult motherboard manual if needed.
Check for pre-installed shields and remove if applicable.
Grounding and Tools
Ground yourself by touching metal (e.g., furniture).
Gather a screwdriver.
Finding Components
Locate the screw (3 inches left of slot) and the standoff.
Remove screw and standoff if needed; check the motherboard box for items if missing.
Confirm M.2 size (most common is 80mm).
Installation Steps
Insert the M.2 SSD
:
Align the gold contact points with the M.2 slot.
Insert at a 15-degree angle until secure.
Secure the SSD
:
Press down to align with standoff and insert the screw.
Avoid overtightening.
For shields, hold drive flat while placing shield over it.
Remove plastic from thermal pad before securing shield.
Final Check
:
Ensure no movement if installed correctly.
Do not cover built-in heat sinks with shields.
Installing 2.5-inch SATA SSD
Preparation
Installation varies by PC case and personal preference.
Common methods: hard drive cage or direct case mounting.
Required Components
SATA data cable (thin, flat cable, typically included with motherboard).
SATA power cable (included with power supply).
Installation Steps
Mount the Drive
:
Use drive cage methods or secure to the case directly.
Ensure sufficient cable length.
Connecting Cables
:
Insert SATA data cable into the shorter port of the SSD.
Insert SATA power cable into the longer port.
Ensure proper orientation; cables only fit one way.
Motherboard Connection
:
Connect the SATA data cable to the motherboard’s SATA 6Gb/s ports for optimal performance.
Note: Older PCs may perform better on first port.
Secure the cable until it clicks.
Additional Tips
For both SSD types, take time to ensure proper installation.
Unplug SATA SSD during Windows installation to avoid confusion with NVMe SSD.
Format the SATA SSD after installation for use.
Conclusion
Installation processes vary, but these steps cover essential practices.
