Hi, this is Professor Charlie Evans and this morning I'm gonna talk a little bit about your Sorrow of War assignment. The book by Bao Ninh which deals with the Vietnamese War. It's actually one in a long series of novels that deal with war. In 102, History 102, we use "All Quiet on the Western Front" the classic World War I novel by Erich Maria Remarque. In Russian history we actually use Leo Tolstoy's ..."Sebastopol" stories about his experiences in the Crimean War of the 1850s. I've got some other wartime books that you guys might be interested at some point in your life. Harrison Salisbury which deals with the siege of Leningrad during World War II. Soldat, a memoir of a German soldier on the Russian Front in World War II. Michael Shaara's, "The Killer Angels" which is -- a novel dealing with the Civil War in the United States. Audie Murphy's famous memoir "To Hell and Back" which deals with his experiences in World War II. He is the most decorated serviceman of the United States in the war. And then John Keegan's famous work "The Face of Battle", which deals with the experiences of soldiers in the medieval times, the nineteenth century and in World War I. Um-but back to Bao Nihn's, "The Sorrow of War" dealing with the Vietnamese War. Uh, point one you gotta remember is you're writing a short paper - one-page -sometimes I'll allow two pages most of the time I want you to focus on one page. Be sure you answer the question for the paper. Don't just start writing -- don't write a history of the Vietnamese War, don't write whatever you think you want to write. Write what the question asks you to focus on. Use quoted material from the book, use paragraph structure for the book, and you should be generally okay. Um the interesting-one of the interesting things about this much like "All Quiet on the Western Front" is that it's not written in a straight forward chronology. It jumps around as experiences come back to that novelist as he was writing it itself. Um-if you're looking for a straight forward chronology in the book you're not gonna get that. But it's an interesting book. It gives you a good idea of of what the Vietnam War was like for the soldiers who fought the war. It's a universal experience for soldiers on both sides. And so that's what you're gonna be writing about in your paper. Okay! Good luck.
