Listening Response Strategies of Effective Communicators

Nonverbal Component

  • Purpose: Shows we are listening and understanding
  • Examples:
    • Head nodding
    • Smiling
    • Matching facial expressions
    • Body positioning (facing the speaker)
  • Verbal Component:
    • Includes vocalized pauses (e.g., "right")
    • Communicates listener's engagement without conveying specific messages

Emotional Support

  • Objective: Create an environment supportive of expression and processing distress
  • Communication Climate:
    • How the speaker feels while talking
    • Avoid rushing or being time-oriented
    • Encourage a people-oriented listening style
  • Approach:
    • Reassure, encourage, console, cheer up
    • Ask clarifying questions to determine if advice or listening is needed
    • Avoid false statements or untruthful reassurances

Constructive Criticism

  • Reception: May not be easy for everyone, but can be beneficial
  • Guidelines:
    • Use "I" statements to reduce defensiveness
    • Be specific with language and examples
    • Start with something positive before critiquing
    • Aim for understanding, not necessarily agreement

Speech Critique

  • Context: Formal situations (e.g., interviews, presentations, project evaluations)
  • Feedback Methods:
    • Respectful, honest, helpful
    • Focus on content, structure, delivery, visual aids
    • Aim to provide feedback that is constructive and respectful

Practical Application

  • Exam Preparation: Answer and reflect on questions
