Voron 0.2 Printer Build and Calibration

Introduction

  • Completed build of Voron 0.2 printer using an LDO kit.
  • Hardware tuning and Clipper configuration done.
    • Motors working correctly.
    • Extruder calibration and axis alignment.

Filament Profile Tuning

  • Aim: To tune a filament profile using Orca Slicer for high-quality prints.
  • Ensure the printer is properly calibrated before starting.
  • Using Elegoo Matte PLA filament for this process.

Calibration Process

  1. Orca Slicer Setup

    • Load Orca Slicer and get familiar with calibration tools.
    • Use system presets for generic PLA and make necessary edits.
    • Important settings for filament:
      • Vendor: Elegoo.
      • Nozzle temperature: 190 to 230°C.
      • Bed temperature: 60°C.
  2. Temperature Calibration

    • Use a temperature tower test print from 190°C to 230°C.
    • Look for overhangs, stringing, and layer adhesion.
    • Selected 220°C as optimal temperature based on print quality and adhesion tests.
  3. Flow Ratio Calibration

    • First pass: Adjust flow ratio to find a baseline (0% is the starting point).
    • Second pass: Fine-tune near the selected baseline.
    • Final flow ratio set at 0.97.
  4. Pressure Advance Calibration

    • Direct drive extruder setup.
    • Use pattern style for calibration.
    • Optimal pressure advance value found: 0.05.
  5. Retraction Test

    • Check for stringing between towers.
    • Confirmed 0.3mm firmware retraction is adequate for PLA.
    • Typically retraction calibration is not necessary per filament.
  6. Dimensional Accuracy: Calibration Flower

    • Measures filament shrinkage.
    • Found: X-axis shrinkage slightly larger than Y-axis.
    • Applied shrinkage compensation: 99.75% in Orca Slicer.
  7. Tolerance and Final Checks

    • Printed tolerance test and Orca cube for final checks.
    • Good fit achieved in tolerance test.
    • Orca cube test verifies dimensional accuracy and print quality.

Conclusion

  • Temperature, flow, and pressure advance are core calibrations for filament.
  • Additional tests (dimensional, retraction) are optional and advanced.
  • Overall successful tuning of Elegoo Matte PLA for Voron 0.2.

Recommendations

  • For basic filament tuning focus on temperature, flow ratio, and pressure advance.
  • Use additional tests for precision and if specific printing issues arise.

Note: Orca Slicer's tools and capabilities may improve in the future, offering more advanced calibration options. Always ensure your firmware and slicer software are up-to-date for best results.
