CNA Procedure for Catheter Care

Initial Steps

  1. Introduction & Consent

    • Xavier introduces himself as the CNA for the day.
    • Confirms the patient's name, "Mrs. Smith," and how she prefers to be addressed.
    • Explains he will assist with catheter care and obtains consent.
  2. Preparation

    • Xavier washes hands and gathers necessary supplies.
    • Closes curtains for privacy.

Catheter Care Procedure

  1. Setup

    • Knocks before re-entering the room and announces his return.
    • Adjusts the bed to a comfortable position and lowers the side rail.
    • Puts on gloves before starting the procedure.
    • Checks water temperature and asks Mrs. Smith to confirm comfort.
  2. Procedure Execution

    • Places a Chuck under Mrs. Smith for protection.
    • Assists Mrs. Smith to cross her arms and legs and gently turns her.
    • Lowers the bath blanket and applies soap.
    • Cleans the catheter:
      • Holds catheter at the meatus without tugging.
      • Cleans at least 4 inches from the meatus, moving in one direction.
      • Uses a clean area of the washcloth for each stroke.
      • Rinses and dries with separate washcloths.
    • Turns Mrs. Smith again to ensure thorough cleansing.
  3. Final Steps

    • Removes gloves and sanitizes hands.
    • Raises side rail and lowers bed to the lowest position for safety.
    • Empties, rinses, and dries the basin; stores it in the designated dirty supply area.
    • Disposes of used linen appropriately and avoids contact with clothing.
    • Provides Mrs. Smith with a call light, phone, tissue, water, and magazines.
    • Ensures Mrs. Smith knows to call if she needs anything else.
    • Opens curtains, washes hands, steps outside to record and report the procedure.
