AutoCAD Interface
AutoCAD comes in two versions:
Autodesk AutoCAD 2020 (complete version)
Autodesk AutoCAD LT (lighter version with limited features, no 3D tools or sheet sets)
Interface may differ slightly on Mac vs Windows but functions are similar.
Starting a New Drawing
Click "Start Drawing" to open a new tab.
Interface Components
Application Button:
Top left, contains frequently used tools.
Quick Access Toolbar:
Similar tools to the application button.
Tabs and Ribbon Area:
Tabs include Home, Insert, Annotate, Parametric, etc.
Each tab has panels containing tools and commands.
Drawing Area:
Main area to create drawings.
Command Bar/Command Line:
Area for typing commands.
Status Bar:
Toggles for making precise drawings.
Making Your First Drawing
To draw a line:
Select line tool or use command alias (type "l").
Follow prompts in the command line to specify points.
Press "Enter" to finish the command.
Navigation Tools
Use the middle mouse wheel to:
Pan the drawing (press and hold middle mouse button).
Zoom in/out by rolling the wheel.
Select objects by clicking them, deselect with "Escape".
Selection Methods
Window Selection:
Drag a solid rectangle around objects to select.
Crossing Window Selection:
Drag a dashed rectangle; selects objects that touch the boundary.
Lasso Selection:
Hold left click and move mouse to draw a freeform selection area.
Setting Up Units
Command to Set Units:
Type "un" in command line.
Options include:
Millimeters
Inches
Unit-less
Choose the desired unit type and decimal format.
Drawing Basics with Line Tool
Start a line with:
Command alias "l" or select line tool.
Click to specify points.
Specify lengths and angles directly in the command line.
Polar Tracking:
Set angles for drawing at specific intervals (e.g., 30, 60 degrees).
Dynamic Input:
Activate with F12 to show tooltips for length and angle as you draw.
