Guarding a Patient from Floor to Wheelchair (Anterior Approach)

Preparation

• Patient Position: Ensure the patient is positioned and ready to move.
• Your Position: Station yourself behind the patient to catch them if they lose balance backward.

During the Transfer

• Hand Position: Move behind the patient and place your hands close to their pelvis.
• Manipulating the Pelvis: Be ready to manipulate the pelvis as needed while holding it.
• Adding Force: If needed, come down and hug the patient’s legs to help lift them into the chair.

Safety Measures

• Support During Lift: Continue to hold the pelvis as they lift up.
• Preventing Falls: Be ready to reach out and protect the patient from falling in any direction.
