Creating a Film Halation Effect in Photoshop
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Duplicate the Layer
- Use Command (Ctrl) + J to duplicate your layer.
2. Adjust Threshold
- Navigate to Image > Adjustments > Threshold.
- Move the slider to the right to apply the effect only to the brightest parts of the photo.
- Press OK to apply.
3. Apply Gaussian Blur
- Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.
- Adjust the blur radius based on the desired strength of the bloom effect.
- More blur for stronger bloom.
4. Change Blend Mode
- Change the blend mode of the blurred layer to "screen" to make the blur visible.
5. Add Red Color for Halation
- Create a new fill layer with a solid red color:
- Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color, and choose red.
- Right-click on the new color layer and select "Create Clipping Mask".
- Change the blend mode of this layer to "overlay" to achieve the halation effect.
6. Adjustments and Tweaks
- Since smart filters are used, double-click on them to make adjustments:
- You can adjust the Gaussian Blur and Threshold settings.
- Use a brush with black or white to manually add or remove halation from specific areas.
