Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Duplicate the Layer

  • Use Command (Ctrl) + J to duplicate your layer.

2. Adjust Threshold

  • Navigate to Image > Adjustments > Threshold.
  • Move the slider to the right to apply the effect only to the brightest parts of the photo.
  • Press OK to apply.

3. Apply Gaussian Blur

  • Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.
  • Adjust the blur radius based on the desired strength of the bloom effect.
    • More blur for stronger bloom.

4. Change Blend Mode

  • Change the blend mode of the blurred layer to "screen" to make the blur visible.

5. Add Red Color for Halation

  • Create a new fill layer with a solid red color:
    • Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color, and choose red.
  • Right-click on the new color layer and select "Create Clipping Mask".
  • Change the blend mode of this layer to "overlay" to achieve the halation effect.

6. Adjustments and Tweaks

  • Since smart filters are used, double-click on them to make adjustments:
    • You can adjust the Gaussian Blur and Threshold settings.
  • Use a brush with black or white to manually add or remove halation from specific areas.
