Overview
The process of measuring mid-upper arm circumference is outlined as a practical alternative to weighing, helping track weight changes over time. Instructions and equipment are provided to ensure accurate measurement, especially under clinical guidance.
Purpose of Measurement
- Mid-upper arm circumference is used when weighing is not possible.
- Repeated measurements reveal trends in weight gain or loss.
- The dietitian provides guidance on measurement frequency and interpretation.
Equipment Needed
- Disposable measuring tape (provided by the dietitian)
- Ballpoint pen
- Optionally, gloves or other PPE in clinical settings
Preparation Steps
- Wash hands for at least 20 seconds before measuring.
- Wear gloves or PPE if required.
- Measurement is taken on the left or least affected arm if there is limb impairment.
Measurement Procedure
- Two people may be needed for children or those unable to follow instructions.
- Bend the arm at a right angle to locate anatomical landmarks.
- Identify and mark the midpoint between the shoulder tip and elbow tip.
- With the arm relaxed and hanging at the side, wrap the tape at the midpoint.
- Ensure the tape is neither too tight nor too loose; zero mark should align with reading.
Recording and Communication
- Ignore colored markings on the tape; record the numerical measurement.
- Send the measurement to the dietitian for assessment and further advice.
