welcome to all of you who are going to take up this course on architectural acoustics this is an 8 module course which will be taken by myself professor savannah Gupta and professor Shankara theme Bhattacharya we are both faculties in the department of architecture and regional planning of IIT Kharagpur I am standing in front of the the Casilla building at IIT Kharagpur where from it is possible to reach you all hopefully most of you are architects or having a background training in architecture how can we reach you all from this particular building we are recording our voice through it is carried to you as best as possible so where we are recording is a particular environment where 100% of the noise of the sound which is produced by us is going to reach you this building has been done by one of our architects one of us like us one of us has designed it he or she or his team has considered that this space will be used for this purpose and that is the primary purpose of being an architect you are to generate spaces which will cater to its needs sound is one of the aspects which architects are to handle apart from the climate the variations the material the topography the ventilation the air-conditioning the lighting within the space which is given so we have to take care of sound what is produced within a system we have to take care of sound which is we call it as noise which is happening outside a system which is not of our interest so we have to take such noise whatever beautiful hospital you design if it is facing the public road we're continuously honking and horns are happening the impatience won't feel comfortable whatever good the design is similarly in a classroom if a child is not hurt to the teacher and neither the teacher is not audible to the entire class what is the purpose of creating a space just writing classroom into it so through these lectures through this course which is containing 40 lectures we will try to shape your mind to take care of sound which is useful take care of noise which is unnecessary which falls within our domain architecture so we have to build our basic understanding of sound physics then move on to room acoustics and reverberation the different kinds of sound absorption materials to take care of sound absorption within a system and then acoustical tract characteristics of the special spaces which we will design we will move into the design principles of an auditorium we can we we will also look into how we can reinforce sound with electro-acoustic s-- we will take care of noise vibration and environmental acoustics so we will step outdoor for designing it is we will also look into classrooms conference halls we will look into lecture rooms we will go into auditoriums details into it how to design it to make it more comfortable to the audience so far our sound is considered but we cannot wipe off all other aspects and only focus on sound we have to know our domain and how best we can provide the sound in that kind of environment I hope it will be an interesting course for all of you those who have registered I hope a number of architects students who are would be architects of our future will get some benefit out of this course and I hope that the professionals who are into the field who are designing or who are creating such spaces who will get benefit out of it though we have a lot of commercially available items we need to know how best we can use it or select it from it to suit our purpose so I thank you all to register for this course and I wish you you will enjoy the course
