your son and that sin doesn't have to reain in our lives we love you and we thank you and in Jesus name we pray Amen in the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth [Music] and then he made [Music] us Abraham a [Music] sacrifice oh my boy my Lord my [Music] boy good evening everyone how are we doing this week a good man you guys are better than second service on Sunday there's like a third of you if you are a part of the second service on Sunday you need to tell your friends like we need to step it up first service is beating you guys Wednesday is beating you guys so we got to work on it second service well I hope you're having a great week because you and I have a lot to be thankful for in spite of all the chaos of life and all the things going on in life you know what Jesus is still King and we get to be here together and we get to study something that has mattered for a very long time and I mean a really long time so if you got your Bibles make sure to turn to the Book of Genesis we're continuing our study here that we've been doing for a number of weeks looking at the very first book of the Bible the book that literally means beginnings and starts with the statement in the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth well this book is important for a lot of reasons number one it tells us the history of everything and beyond that the history of humanity we're going to see some of that even tonight and then specifically as it Narrows down its story line to the beginning of the history of the Jewish people well if we are followers of Jesus if we are Christians then the Jewish people matter a lot to us because our King's a Jew and we need to know how he got here and we might need to know what's coming up next well we'll get to that later down the road but it starts right here in the Book of Genesis Hebrew history as well as human history um I just want to draw your attention to this again a lot of you have this chart if you haven't got this make sure to get it from from me or one of the staff members um we're not going to be using it much for this study but this chart is really really important especially if the study of the Bible is something kind of new to you having the Bible in order is so important a number of years ago I had a really long extended very confusing conversation with a man who came into the church I was at it was up in Alaska and he we spent about two hours going back and forth about just how disgusted he was that we celebrated Easter and so disgusted he was that we served uh ham at Easter and we had this long conversation and it was long because I kept telling him my my my friend well yeah the the Bible says don't eat pork it does it does but that is said in a certain context there's a certain place in the story where that is said and that's not the case beforehand and then later in the story it says Jesus made all foods clean so we're okay and no no no no you got that wrong that's not in the Bible Well I show them in the Bible and then I go back to gen to Genesis because he keeps telling me that Moses lived before Abraham and Abraham followed Moses's laws where it says don't eat pork well Abraham's in the Book of Genesis and about 400 years later in the book of Exodus Moses is born pretty easy comparison but if you don't if you don't have the story line the blue the blue books there you don't have the history of the Bible like straight in your head then all the other things you're going to read psalms Proverbs all the other stories um I had a question Pros to me today like what what is with all the laws in Leviticus and Deuteronomy like why are there all these weird laws like don't wear two different types of clothing don't wear polyester and cotton at the same time seriously there's a there's a rule in the Bible about that but there's a context to that command that you have to understand if you don't then I realize why it's confusing so um please get that chart just to help you as you study the Bible to kind of put the Old Testament into the proper story line the whole book of Genesis is a story line that we're going to see here in just a minute um just remind you of the four steps of the book early in the book chapters 1 through 11 we got these these four events creation fall flood that we just finished and we're going to be starting into the section here on the Nations where do people groups come from you know if you look around the room not one of you looks like the person sitting there next to you whether you're married or not yall don't look Don we don't look alike right Frank we don't look alike arm we don't look alike where did that come from how does that happen well this book of Genesis helps us understand that that's going to be in chapters 9 through 11 and uh we're going to see that together tonight then there's going to be four people we're going to be looking at specifically Abram Isaac Jacob and Joseph looking at as the story line goes from the universe to the Earth to humanity down to a guy named Abraham in the beginning of the Jewish or Hebrew people well remember also as we've gone through the last couple chapters starting in Genesis chapter 5 we we enter a new section of the book where we we we we we move off of the creation account with Adam and now we start into the kind of fast-paced storyline trying to get from human history to Jewish history from Adam to Abraham and so you go from chapter 5 through chapter 11 is basically a rundown of human history from Adam to Abraham that's where he's trying to get to the author Moses is trying to get you from Human history to Jewish history well along the way we got these two story lines the flood account and that we're going to see next week the Babel account the Tower of Babel situation that interject into these genealogies and I I just again encourage you to to to note this if you haven't like written this down if you haven't like taken a snapshot of this you need to see this because you're going to see it again tonight as we look at chapters 9 and 10 and if you haven't run into one of these problems I'm going to present one of them to you one of the criticisms one of the contradictions that people will throw at Christians you can't trust the Bible because of this goes away when you can just put the story in order and if we don't do that then we're going to end up having to Fumble through all these different problems that just evaporate when we get the story in line all right so we're going to be looking at Genesis chapter 9 if you got your Bible there please go there looking at a divided world now hold on a second we just saw a deluged world a flooded World a destroyed World in chapter 6 78 and the first half of chapter 9 how can it be divided how can we have all the differences in the world today if what the Bible says is true all of humanity is destroyed except for this one family on this one boat well if we got one family on one boat shouldn't everything be pretty normal shouldn't we all look alike shouldn't we all sound alike should shouldn't there be a lot more Conformity if this is really true well we're going to see very quickly after the flood account the spreads out and then eventually gets pushed out through a series of different events but look at chapter 9 starting there at Verse 18 now remember this is following the flood account you got chapter 6 7 8 and N the flood account chapter nine covers God's blessing of Noah After the flood account as Noah gets off the ark makes a sacrifice God is pleased with that and blesses Abraham with several things remember what those things are you laughed you got to tell me now okay well among them you have for example the uh blessing there in the promise there in chapter 8 uh verse 21 that I will never again curse the ground because of man God makes a promise there then God blesses Noah in chapter 9 verse1 and tells them to be fruitful and multiply then he talks about uh then he gives a provision of food to humanity a provision that had not been provided before again there's there's progression to the story before we told Adam and Eve eat plant life no mention of meat until you get to chapter 9 now God says you're allowed to eat meat and all the veget the the uh all the carnivores say Amen right that's that's our verse right there well then you have in ch chapter 9 at verse um uh five you have the institution of the first social law which some some of us squirm at sometimes but it's very important capital punishment God gives the first Human Institution the first social law and there's two reasons number one because God vales human life he says you're going to protect human life and those of you that violate human life we're going to remove you this is so important in the near future we're going to be having a number of things going on here at 412 Church talking about America and life and we need to understand the proper role of government what is God's view of government well you read places like Romans 13 the the God's function for human government its primary function is to protect the innocent to bless the innocent and to restrain and punish evil and governments that don't do that are are failing God's model of what government is supposed to be well one of the first places we see that is right here if someone commits murder then Society is meant to punish them to remove that which is violating human value you get it out of society so God protects Humanity in that way giving that provision then you have the Covenant given in chapter uh chapter 9:1 God says I establish my Covenant with you to never again cut off All Flesh on the Earth by a flood God makes a promise and remember what is the sign of that promise the rainbow God says I will put as a sign of this Covenant in the sky my rainbow and friends again if you see a rainbow and you think well that's interesting you're missing the point if you see a rainbow and you think politics you think social issues you think Pride you're thinking exactly what Satan wants you to think that is not about you it's not about your opinion on social issues that is a symbol of God's grace every time you see it God's promise I will never destroy the world that way again now the Bible tells us he will one day judge this world and if you come to our men's bible study starting on um August 27th we're going to be looking at the book of second Peter starting in chapter 3 where God talks about what is coming a different catastrophe is coming that he has promised but he makes the Covenant here I will never do this again this way well we pick up with that at uh there at Verse 18 where it says this and the sons of Noah went forth from the ark these were Shem ham and japheth and J and ham excuse me was the father of Canaan please note that just make a mental note of that he tells tells us the names of the three boys and then makes a specific note about one of them ham is the father of Canan we'll come back to that in a minute these three verse 19 were the sons of Noah and from these the people of the whole earth were dispersed so where did we all come from where what is part of human history well there's a lot of people that have a a lot of different opinions on that in fact even amongst Christians there is confusion on that again a number of years ago I was a I was a youth pastor up in Alaska we were having this Youth Event and we were shooting Nerf bullets at each other me and a bunch of kids you students and stuff hitting each other with with Nerf swords and things and we stopped to do a little dvo and I mentioned at some point in there something about how we are all related we're all connected Bible tells us to Adam and I had this 12-year-old kid raise his hand and say wait a second my parents told me that there were lots of people in human history and Adam Adam and Eve were just one or just two of lots of people because the Bible says that Cain got a wife remember that in Genesis chter 4 well if what the Bible says is true and there's only Adam and Eve Cain and Abel and Cain kills Abel now there's only Adam and Eve so where did Cain get his wife there must have been other people right remember that remember that we talked about that like I know two months ago Bible says God made Adam and Eve and from them human how do you get that from just two people how do you get such a wide variety of people well history well thank you my friend God's amazing how do you get all the different types of of of dogs how do you get all the types of different hor my wife is really into horses I don't get that but how do you get all those varieties well God put a lot of thought into his creation including into you and me last week I showed you a clip of about M Mount St Helens that's from a a documentary series called is Genesis history it's available on Amazon Prime and my sons and I were actually watching that this morning and the first part kind of talks about the rocks and the formations and the layers and everything and then later it gets on to the genetic side of things how do you get all these varieties of creatures from just a couple of animals that would have been on the ark well maybe you've asked that question as you look around at other people you know it's not just Genesis that talks about this you can all go go all the way over to the book of Acts and I do want to draw your attention to this sermon right here this is one of the like most important sermons in the Bible when the Apostle Paul ends up going to a totally different people group he's in the city of Athens now Paul's a first century Jew he ends up going to Athens a pagan Greek city not familiar with the Bible not familiar with his religion he ends up going to a place called the areopagus and giving this message to a bunch of people who worship a bunch of different gods he looks around and he sees an altar that says the altar to the unknown God he says great I got my hook hey guys listen to me now he's he's in this forum you know kind of like a TED Talk there's a bunch of people given TED Talks at this place was a place where the philosophers would all get together and share different ideas he gets up and he says hey I noticed you got this altar over here to the unknown God let me tell you about him let me tell you about the real God and he starts out like this the God who made the world and everything in it being Lord of Heaven and Earth made from one man every nation of man kind to live on all the face of the Earth not only did Moses think that all of humanity came from One Source but Paul did too apparently and we'll end up coming back to this sermon later because there's something really important that follows this but just notice that when did that happen though well Genesis 2 tells us it starts with Adam and Eve and we saw an expansion of the human race but then we had Genesis 6 and the Restriction of that through an event called the flood to where now you're down to eight people Noah his wife and their three sons and their three wives and from them we we see here in Genesis CH 9: 19 from these all the people of the earth were dispersed where do you and I come from we come from a boat I'm not really a boat guy Pastor Thomas is a boat guy where's Pastor Thomas he's here somewhere he's a boat guy there he is want talk about boats go talk to him I'm not a boat guy you know but what an amazing statement all the people of the Earth from One Source well if that is the case maybe you're wondering like how do we have all these differences you know the people that Moses wrote this book to probably had that same question because remember Moses is writing this book in in the midst of The Exodus experience he's taking the people of Israel out of Egypt they're wandering around in the desert and how many how many of you have been to Israel and seen that desert okay it's a lot like here you don't have to imagine that much it's a lot like here it's you go to Palm Springs it's a desert like that people are wandering out there God's telling them you're going to go to a specific land a land that I've promised you and there's a bunch of people there and you're going to have to deal with it you're going to have to have these these these conflicts those people were asking the same questions that maybe you and I asked today why are there all these differences between us who are these people where did we come from and that's what we're going to see him answering right here but first we've got another one of these little stories in the midst of the big story and this one's a lot really disappointing and I want to draw your attention back to something we said back in Genesis chapter 3 remember this sin has consequences and sin affects other people sometimes we think well you know it's not a big deal I'm not hurting anyone friends everything you do affects other people whether positively or negatively any of you that have lost someone intentionally or not know how much that hurts I've lost a number of friends intentionally on their part through the years and one of the lies is no one cares about me and no one will miss me it's not true sin has consequences and sin affects others we saw that in Genesis chter 3 and we're going to see it again here in this story as well verse 20 Noah began to be a man of the soil a man of the ground same same description as of Cain back in Genesis chapter 4 and he planted a Vineyard and drank the wine and became drunk and laid uncovered in his tent and ham the father of Canaan second time we've seen that statement saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brothers outside and then Shem and japheth took a garment laid it on their shoulders and walked backwards and covered the nakedness of their father and their faces were turned backwards so that they did not see their father's nakedness and when Noah awoke from his his wine his drunkenness he knew what his youngest son had done to him it's really weird story in the midst okay we got the flood and all this kind of big stuff going on we're going to end up getting to Abraham and everything but then you got this really weird little story here about a son who dishonors his father just remember it doesn't start with ham this weird little story here starts with Noah sin has consequences and sin has effects what's Noah's first issue he's drunk that's a tough issue for a lot of us maybe maybe You' struggled with that maybe you are struggling with that this is something that we see all through the pages of the Bible and I know Jesus turns water into wine absolutely Paul tells Timothy you know you got stomach problems drink a little wine for your stomach absolutely but how many times through the pages of the Bible and how much of your life have you seen the negative effects of drunkenness well this is the first time that we have this issue in the Bible and it's not a good situation and I want to just draw to share two things with you two things from the rest of scripture number one is wisdom from The Book of Proverbs proverbs 31 you know we always go to this chapter to talk about what an excellent wife look looks like well the beginning of the chapter is not about an excellent wife it's actually about how a king behaves because this chapter is a an oracle from a mom a very wise mom to her son about how her son who's the king needs to be a good King number one don't be an idiot number two don't get drunk number three find a good wife those are good things that's wisdom right well one of the things that she says here is this it is not for Kings to drink wine or for rulers to take strong drink and here's why you might say well I'm not a king so I don't need to to listen to this it's a very unwise thing to say wisdom is to hear instruction to hear the warning it is not for Kings to drink wine or rulers to take strong drink lest they drink and two things forget what has been decreed forget the law forget the responsibilities and pervert we might use the word abuse the rights of the afflicted we all have responsibilities in our life and when we subject ourselves to things that affect our mind Cloud our judgment it's going to affect others you get drunk and get in your car it's going to affect others you get drunk and go home and beat on your family it's going to affect others well I didn't mean to doesn't matter you made a decision you sin it affected others there's wisdom here those who have responsibilities those who have power power those who are in charge th and whether you do or not the wisdom is don't lose control of your faculties don't don't Cloud your judgment as we see here with Noah he falls into this and there's consequences second thing that's that's a wisdom thing there's a principle there second thing is this a command in Ephesians chapter 5 we have this statement now Noah didn't have this so I'm not going to rag on him too much for this but you and I do and one of the commands that Paul gives an apostle of Jesus gives to the church in the book of Ephesians is this do not get drunk with wine that is a command it's an imperative statement do not get drunk with wine why for this is debauchery but then there's a an explanation of it but be filled with the spirit don't be filled with something that clouds your mind be something that be filled with something that illuminates your mind makes you clearer makes you wiser you know we have friends here that work in law enforcement and just ask them how much of their job has to do with people losing control of themselves due to alcohol or substances a lot my brother is a uh sheriff's deputy in Tennessee he's been a police officer in Alaska a lot of his job has to do with this issue so the wisdom is don't put yourself in bad situation don't put yourself in the danger is there Freedom when it comes to the issue of of drinking yes there is but wisdom needs to play a part in that and you have the command there there comes a point it's too far and now it's sin well Noah takes it so far he's now drunk and his son walks in his son Ham who's been on the boat for a year with him he's been hanging out with Dad and Mom and everyone else for a year on the boat smelling the animals for a year they get off the boat they start planting stuff and for whatever reason whatever the movies say and maybe you've seen some of the movies and they give you all kinds of different reasons for this we're not told the reason ham dishonors his father we see there in verse 21 22 ham the father of Canan saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brothers outside now maybe you've read this before and really see this is is really an innocent thing like okay Ham's trying to find out where his dad is walks into the tent sees his dad whoops okay hey hey guys dad dad's over here passed out so simple so what is Noah so mad about later in the story well just just want to share another option with you and this is this is I don't know if I'm convinced of this but there's a lot of people a lot of good people lot of Christians um Dr Robert gagnan for example is a great example of this of someone who really studies this really knows the languages and things and would point out the similarity of elements in this story to other things later in Moses's writings first off when it says there he saw the nakedness of his father that's a parallel statement over in Leviticus 18 where Moses the same author writes the laws that God gives to the people of Israel and amongst those laws are the forbidding of different sexual activities and in the midst of that you have this statement for example about seeing the nakedness of someone else a particular family member and it being a disgrace and having consequences within the Mosaic law and the people of Israel and the argument is there's something bigger here than just like hey making fun of dad dad's passed out haha it's bigger than that the the thought here it certainly could be the case because as we look at how Noah responds to what ham did and the consequences for the rest of human history it would seem to make more sense more than just mocking dad maybe it was maybe it was as simple as just dishonoring his father what's commandment number five when God writes the law with his own hand what's commandment number five thank you honor your father and your mother ham broke that law ham Dishonored his dad one way or another whether it was just laughing at him or in some way physically violating him something bad happened and Noah is not happy about it now when your children do something foolish how do you respond a lot of us are parents here I'm not asking for confessions I'm just getting you to think about it when when your kids are acting up how far do you go with it well Noah issues a curse and this has often been called The Curse of ham I just mention that because it's not but this has been used through history it has been abused through history and you are probably going to get it thrown in your face at some point so I just want to explain it to you in human history people have taken the Bible and used it to abuse other people and here's one of the places that that is happened here's how it happens people in human history that were trying to justify the slave trade point to various texts in the Bible because the Bible addresses the issue of slavery in different ways here's one of the places where they would point to and say aha because Noah cursed his son Ham and as we're going to see the descendants of ham end up mostly on the continent of Africa that's why all the descendants that's why a bunch of people from Africa have faced such an enormity of Oppression when it comes the issue of slavery 10 million sold off into slavery in AR in Arabia in the um in the Islamic slave trade uh million sold off in the transatlantic slave trade to America the Caribbean to Western Europe down to South America and they would say it's okay because of this curse back here in Genesis chapter 9 and some you'll hear it called the curse of ham well here's the problem with it it's not the curse of ham and I've had conversations with very good people that made this mistake it's it's something that they've heard and is getting repeated friends we need to know the Bible well enough to not repeat the mistakes we all do it at some point and here's one place where it has happened it's not the curse of ham here you see it here in verse 25 but Ham's the one who whatever he did Ham's the one who did it but you'll notice here in verse 25 it's not ham who gets cursed it's his son Canan twice now we've seen this statement ham the father of Canaan and now Canaan gets cursed the author is pre-loading or frontloading the situation here with Canan and Noah coming up out of his drunkenness SIN number one becoming angry SIN number two number three for whatever reason dogging on his grandson Kan sitting over there I don't know if he's like 10 years old I don't know if he's a man I don't know but he's like what what the heck man I didn't do it I I what Canan did but this is what Noah says cursed be a servant of servants shall he be to his brothers and he also said blessed be the Lord Yahweh the god of Shem and let Canaan be his servant and may God enlarge japheth and let him dwell in the tents of Shem and let Canaan be his servant see how that could be misused if if you're if you're calling this the curse of ham so Ham's descendants end up serving the descendants of Shem and japheth ero slavery was okay that was the argument it's not the curse of him it's the the curse of Canaan first off and that's not all the descendants of H and canaan's descendants don't end up in Africa anyway they end up in a totally different place that we're going to see here in a second but notice there the the blessing to japheth and Shem to dwell together and then the curse upon Canaan to be the servant to be subject to his brothers this is a simple curse in the midst of a simple situation ham dishonors his dad dad loses his temper and now his grandson gets cursed but as we've seen with other curses like in Genesis chter 3 there are ongoing repercussions I just want to remind you of this sin has consequences and sin affects others was Noah wrong to curse Canaan I kind of default to yes but but the reality is it was part of history and I don't think Noah knew the extent of what he was doing here when Adam took that fruit and ate it God told him he would die he didn't tell him everyone's going to die and we talked about this back in Genesis 5 as Noah lives 900 plus years and he watches generation after generation come and go and die he watches Cain kill his son Abel he watches his great great grandson lamech kill another guy how often did Adam wonder how things could have been different well Noah ends up cursing his grandson it has consequences down through history and it ends up being played out whether Noah knew it or not whether this was a prophecy from him or not the descendants of Canaan would be subject to many other people particularly the descendants of Shem particularly the Jewish people as Moses the author is writing this book They're marching toward the land of Canaan to subjugate and to drive out the descendants of Canaan because God has given the descendants of Shem in this case the Jews specifically this land that is occupied by the descendants of Canaan it's happening as Moses is writing this history he's explaining to the people what are we doing here why are we going to Canaan what's going to happen who are these people he's explaining that story in the midst of it actually happening and then we have what's called another bookend statement before we get there let's ask this question was that fair was that fair for for Canan to be cursed instead of ham is it fair for someone else to die because you get drunk and drive your car no it's not but it happens you know what's also not fair just this always reminds me of this story over here in 2 Samuel 12 when David sins with ba Sheba commits adultery then commits murder he repents but when a prophet named Nathan goes and talks to him David repents but this is what Nathan says to him the Lord has taken away your sins so you will not die but since you have shown total contempt for the Lord by this affair the son that is Born To You Must Die is that fair sin has consequences and you don't always get to pick those consequences so the wisdom is don't sin right I don't know what the consequences of this action will be I don't if it'll affect just me or it'll affect my kids or it'll affect my wife and we see story after story after Story like this earlier in uh at the end of first Samuel a guy named nabal gets drunk and insults King David David says Fine soldiers get your swords we're going to go kill everyone in that guy's family don't get drunk don't be foolish don't shoot your mouth off in front of a guy who can kill you that'd be my one of the principles and it's only because of a very wise woman named Abigail that that doesn't happen well we have there in verse 28 then a statement we've seen before after the flood Noah lived 350 years and all the days of Noah were 950 and he died was that fair ham made the mistake and didn't get cursed Noah made the mistake and he gets to live another 350 years poor Canan gets gets the consequences one more thing I want to draw your attention to we've mentioned this before but over in Romans chapter 5 someone else did something and you get the consequences in fact two people did something and you get the consequences and if one offends you then you can't have the other one just remember this for by one man's Disobedience the many were made Sinners and by one man's obedience the many will be made righteous is that fair is that fair that Jesus died on a cross and you get to go to heaven man you're jumping ahead of me here it's just is it fair is it fair that Jesus got beat and I didn't is it fair that Jesus dies for my sins is it fair that he took my place when he didn't sin I don't think it's fair but you know what I don't want fair fair sends me to hell that's why I want Grace that's why we want that rainbow because it's a symbol of Grace not Pride not arrogance not me but of God's grace and here again we see it sin has consequences sin affects others and Adam's sin long ago now results in the death of his great great great great great great great I got to count great great nine great grandchild named Noah hopefully that sounds familiar to you because if you jump back to chapter five we saw this statement over and over and over again starting with Adam he lived this many years and then chapter 5:5 and thus the days of Adam were 930 years and he died and the years of Seth were this and then he died and the years of Jared were this and then he died the days of Methuselah were this and he died lay and then he died well now it's Noah's turn four chapters later Noah lives 950 years and he died it took a long time but sin has consequences and sin affects others and Noah is finally off the scene then we get into chapter 10 following the statement he died we then have this statement these are the generations of the sons of Noah Shem ham and japheth the sons who were born to them after the flood and I want you to just note that there because in this timeline we've mentioned this several times this is why I want you to get it because I'm going to show you an example of when you're going to get attacked by people who don't understand the back and forth literary structure of the Book of Genesis you've got these sections of genealogies chapter 5 chapter 10 chapter 11 and in those genealogies you have inserted these pauses that give you details of part of that timeline and if you miss that I'm going to show you here in a second you're going to end up facing some criticisms or making mistakes or feeling like you can't trust the Bible because of that just notice that there and you have these bookend statements that are meant to show you that remember chapter one in the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth there's a bookend statement to that in chapter 2:4 these are the generations of the heavens and the earth when God created them bookend statements pause and then following that it goes back into that story line to tell you details within that first story line here we have it again we're going to have this statement here these are the generations of the sons of Noah After the flood the end of the chapter ends with this statement these are the clans of the sons of Noah according to their genealogies in their Nations and from these nations spread abroad on the earth After the flood bookend statements pause go back and tell part of the story within that bracket okay we'll get to that NE at the end here and into next week so what are the what are these Generations well first off you have there in in verse two the generations of japheth and you have a number of weird names here Gomer Goomer pile he remembers Goomer pile okay there he is right there in the Bible good name Goomer Magog midi Yavin tubal mesek and tias and then it goes into the sons of the sons why does he do this why consider here for what why does Moses spend an entire chapter giving us names after names after names there are 70 names in this Chapter 70 none of whom you'd name your kid after probably maybe a couple of them maybe why does he do this because the world in which Moses lived had a bunch of names and he wants his audience the children of Israel as they're traveling through the world here to understand their world and where they're going and who these people are and what their relationships are and so we'll see this later on Through The Narrative of the Old Testament as they run into these people groups but if you look at this map here the 70 names most of them end up fitting on this map and this is a rough a rough estimate of these different breakdowns as the sons of Noah kind of break off in these different areas their descendants end up in these different regions roughly japas tending to be north of uh the Middle East there North of Israel and then Shem and ham being kind of connected there at the central point being the land of Canaan Israel reaching down into Africa but look a couple of these names and I want you to notice these because we'll see them again through the pages of the Bible first off you got the sons of japheth the second one you see there is MOG well if you follow Pastor Tom and you listen to Pastor Mark and Jan marel and others you probably heard about Gog and Magog these are names that appear in the prophecies like of Ezekiel talking about a coming day and Great Tribulation and things over the Book of Revelation it says that Satan will go out to deceive the Nations going into the four corners of the earth even to Gog and Magog it's a it's a term that comes to be used to refer to these different areas of the earth and eventually becoming used being used to express how far this is to the the furthest extent well here it's a name where where do the where do these where do these weird names come from in our world when when I was living up in Alaska I lived on the uh what's called the spur highway it's one of the the very few highways in the entire County and I lived in the city of Kenai and the road extends about another 20 miles past my house and then it dead ends that's why it's called the spur it's a dead end Highway past my house the whole area north of there there were a number of different areas there was salamatov and Nikiski and some others but that whole area up there was called the North Road so what do you think we called people who lived on the North Road Bob no we call them North roaders well why because the north the road goes north and then dead ends well same thing in our world maybe you like where does the name Egypt come from it's just a random word that pops into history from nowhere uh no actually we're going to see it here in a second what about Gog and Magog what what about Canaan what about all these other things well Moses is explaining this to the people in his generation you have not only Magog there but you have names like ashkenaz if you've been to Israel you've probably seen some ashkanazi Jews Jews who ended up being from in the Middle Ages ending up in Northern and Central Europe or then coming back to Israel they're referred to as ashkanazi Jews because the area of ashkenaz was North of Israel you can kind of see it up there kind of in the area of Georgia to well we would call Georgia today and it came to be it was a ter word that was used to refer to people who live north kind of like North rers well in the Middle Ages as the Israelites are being driven out of Middle East by the Romans a lot of them end up going north and the ones that end up north in Europe the term for them ends up becoming ashkan It came it was actually a word they used to refer to like Germany but it refers to those who live in the North and now we got Ashkenazi Jews things like that you have these other names tarish Kum and others but there's the most important statement is verse 5 from these the Coastland people spread in their lands each with his own language by their Clans and in their Nations just make note of that verse 5 there because we're going to see that again verse six and the sons of ham were Kush Egypt put and Canaan all of which are areas that we know the land of kush is therea that we call Southern Egypt today the northern area of Egypt the land of put is kind of Western Egypt and um and and of course Canaan these are all areas that came to be named after these people know any places like that how about San Diego how about San hento youall know this this town's named after someone St St Jeff is that what you said Jack St Jack well you go look that up I don't think it's St Jack St hento San Diego St Diego Santa Barbara St Barbara Santa Monica St Monica these are places named after people well here the same thing these are people that eventually places get named after in the midst of of Ham's descendants you got a couple of important people number one there I want you to notice is uh verse eight and Kush fathered a guy named Nimrod who was the first on the earth to be a mighty man the term there is Gabor we've seen this term before back in Genesis chapter 6 when it talked about the Nephilim there were mighty men in those days it's the term Gabor the same term is used of David's bodyguards in the book of 2 Samuel he has 30 mighty men that were called Gabor it's also a term that's used of God in Isaiah chapter 6 uh not chapter six chapter n man blank God chapter 9 verse uh six where he talks about um you know a son will be given to us a child will be born and the government will be on his shoulders he'll be called wonderful counselor the Mighty God that is the term El Gabor L God Gabor Mighty it's a term that we have right here as well this guy named Nimrod is is an important guy he plants a place plants a city called um be the beginning of his kingdom verse 10 is Babel Eric and aod again places that we know of they're in the area of Babylon or uh Baghdad today and uh from that he then went verse 11 from that he went from that land he went to Assyria and built Nineveh another important city we see like in the Book of Jonah and so on and so forth it mentions the Philistines down there in verse 14 then it goes to verse 15 and spends an extended portion talking about the descendants of Canaan why is that because Moses's audience is headed to the land of Canaan and it talks about some of the people groups here and where they came from so Canaan verse 15 fed sidon which is a city that still exists today in the northern part of the land of Canaan sidon was his firstborn in Heth and from Canaan these are not names now these are people groups that come from Canaan the jebusites the amorites the gites the hivites the arites the sinites the Arvid ites the zerit and the hamites I'm going to avoid all the jokes these are people groups that end up in the land of Canaan and these are names that we end up seeing later on for example if you have a map if you have your Bible hopefully you have a physical Bible and you look in the back you got Maps you might have a map that looks something like this the land of Canaan came to refer to what we would call Israel and part of Jordan today and we can identify the different areas where these different people groups ended up for example the jebusites appear around the city of Jerusalem we'll see that over in uh in 2 Samuel I believe you also have the amorites mentioned for example in Genesis 15 where God makes a promise to Abraham you're going to have this land and then he Maps it out for for him this is in Genesis 15:1 16 well it's before verse 16 but he says not yet your descendants will have this land after they're in bondage in a land that's not their own for 400 years because the iniquity of the amorites is not yet complete we talked about this back um at the beginning of chapter 6 God gives Humanity 120 years before the flood was that fair God gives the amorites a kind of the leading tribe of what would be the Canaanite people he gives them 400 years was that fair how long has God given you long time I'm I'm not asking how old you are I'm not asking that kind of stuff just see there amorites appear later in the story where did they come from well Moses explains this here in Genesis CH 10 uh jebusites over in 2 Samuel 5 King David a thousand years after this is still interacting with one of the Canaanite peoples mentioned right here the jebusites they're in Jerusalem excuse me then he says verse 20 these are the sons of ham by their Clans their languages their lands and their Nations now there's another book anying we need to need make make mention of need to need to recognize as he talks about the the three sons of Noah each of them ends with the same statement from these people with their Languages by their Clans by their Nations here's the question though and here's here's the contradiction that you're going to get maybe thrown in your face once in a while three times in chapter 10 it says these are the people groups with their languages flip over to chapter 11 verse one and it says this now the whole earth had one language how can you dumb Christians trust your Bible in in chapter 10 it says that there's a bunch of languages then in chapter 11 there's only one language the Bible's stupid you're stupid let's go home right no because again we have a timeline of history and we have these bookend statements talking about these different periods that we're trying to cover in chapter 10 these are the generations of this people group with their languages they had different cultures different nations but then in chapter 11 just like we saw in chapter six just like we saw in Chapter 2 you have a pause from the big story and then a step back into that big story to tell you a piece of the story to give you the relevant information how do you end up getting all these people in all these different languages if they all came off the same boat how are we speaking different languages well that's what chapter 11's about chapter 10 is telling you the big story chapter 11 is a pause to step into that story and give you certain information about that excuse me then we have the descendants of Shem in verse 21 to Shem also the father of the children of Eber the brother of japheth children were born into Shem you have born Elum Asher uh Arad lud and Aram I just mention that because in verse 25 you have a very interesting character in verse 25 it says this to Eber was born two sons and the name of the one was pel for in his days the Earth was divided this is an interesting statement because it appears twice in the Bible not only here in Genesis chap 10 but over in 1st Chronicles chap 1 do you know that people in the in the old world really liked writing down names you read the book of numbers there's a lot of names you read the book of Chronicles there's a lot of names well first 1 Chronicles chapter 1 basically just copies Genesis CH 10 including this statement about pale in his Day the Earth was divided I just mentioned that because you you all kinds of different theories about this what does it mean the Earth was divided for example there are people that say Well it must have been in the days of peleg that you had the division of the continents U our friends over at uh uh Answers in Genesis have an article on this specifically um they they agree along with many people that at one time the continents of the earth were connected in some way and they believe as I believe during the flood you have such massive tectonic activity going on you end up having the division they like I would say that did not happen in the days of pel instead what is this referring to just my opinion here I don't if it matters to you or not but through this section here you have the same idea coming up over and over and over and over again not the divisions of continents but the divisions of people and so I would that statement in the days of pel the Earth was divided not to be a reference to Pangia but to the events of that we'll see in chapter 11 Babel that the dispersion of people happened in the generation in the days of this guy named pel because all through the Section starting in chapter 9 all the way into chapter 11 really the idea is how do we have this dispersion this division this spreading of people and so that's that's what I think it's referring to well then here at the end of chapter 10 we see these two the these these two bookend statements you have verse 31 which is the bookend statement to the descendants of Shem well then in verse 32 you have the bookend statements to the descendants of Noah so again big story details here you've got a book ending followed by a book ending the book ending to Shem followed by the book ending to the story of Noah it says this these are the clans of the sons of Noah according to their genealogies in their Nations and from their Nations and from these the Nations spread abroad on the Earth After the flood well why did that happen why did they spread out we'll see that next week in an event called the Tower of Babel but what is the value of of chapters like this a bunch of names what's the value of seeing a bunch this guy had this kid this guy had this kid and there's this name that I can't pronounce and here's another name I can't pronounce what is the value in that well first off the value is in recognizing that the Bible actually happened in history and you can see it in the details like this you know I love my Mormon friends but they struggle with something there are really important details in the Book of Mormon and they can't find them I would say CU they didn't happen there's a city called Bountiful there's another city called zarahemla there's a Hill Called gamor that are really important to the story of The Book of Mormon you can't find them even little details like the things here you and I need to be really thankful we can go find these things if you've been to Israel you can go touch so much of what the Bible talks about do we know where everything is and where every one of these guys end up no we don't know everything but the there's so much of it that you can touch it's worth trusting the stuff you can't until you figure it out that's what I'm saying so for example here's this this hill right here anyone been there if you pay about $6,000 there's people over in the Middle East that'll take you here this is a place called Jebel musa it means the mountain of Moses now there's there's there's several mountains called the mountain of Moses there's one in in Egypt this one's over in Saudi Arabia why is it called the mountain of Moses because the Bible says that when Moses went on the up on the mountain to get the Ten Commandments that God touch the mountain with fire and lightning and everything and burn the top of that mountain well here's a mountain that has a very dark very charred top and I don't know if this is Mount Si or not but there are people who live here and have for centuries and centuries and centuries refer to this as the mountain of Moses the Jebel musa I don't know if that is the real spot but there were people who have lived a long time who really thought Moses was a real person and was really there because there was someone named Moses I don't know if it was at the spot or not but these names persist because they actually happened in history the Bible talks about Jerusalem guess what you can go find Jerusalem can't go find zerah but you can find Jerusalem it talks about sidon you can go find sidon it's still there today it's in a country called Lebanon what's the point of all this point is this go back to that sermon in Acts chapter 17 The God Who made the heavens and the Earth and from one man all the peoples of the earth that same God who made them the same God who made you and me the sermon goes on and says he commands all people everywhere to repent is that fair the one who made me commands me to do something is that fair He commands everyone everywhere to repent is that fair who is he to say that well he's the one who made you let's start with that there was a whole lot more but let's start with that but it doesn't stop there please notice this He commands all people everywhere to repent because he has fixed a day in which he will judge the world as he did in the days of Noah in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed and of this he has given Assurance by raising him from the dead God raised one man from the dead his name is Jesus and that Resurrection Paul argues is the evidence for a day of judgment that is coming that Jesus Will enact upon this world and so the sign of Grace the the rainbow is repent a day is coming Noah said a day is coming and that day came well you and I are living in the same situation we live in a world that has a day of judgment coming and the extension of God's hand of grace to you is right now repent trust Jesus Noah trusted a boat you get something a whole lot better than a boat you get a man who defeated death will you do it friends if you don't know Jesus if you have not repented to The God Who made you please do that tonight if you need to talk with me you want to talk with Pastor Thomas or any one of the staff here we are here for you now is the time to obey the one who made you would you pray with me Lord thank you so much for this evening the chance that we have to look at your
