Overview
This lecture reviews sample questions and answers for the Ontario G1 Knowledge Test, covering rules of the road and road sign meanings, along with key penalties and safe driving practices.
Test Structure & Requirements
- The G1 Knowledge Test has 40 questions: 20 on rules of the road, 20 on road signs.
- You must answer at least 16 questions correctly in each section (80% passing mark).
Rules of the Road
- U-turns are prohibited where visibility is low, at railway crossings, bridges, tunnels, and where your view is obstructed.
- At a red light, obey police officer directions over traffic signals.
- Check mirrors, signal, and shoulder check before changing lanes; signal before moving from a curb.
- If right wheels drop off the roadway, ease off the gas and steer gently back.
- Do not use handheld electronics; use only hands-free devices.
- Use the two-second rule to ensure safe following distance.
- Slow down in construction zones and obey flaggers.
- Never drive with a suspended license or lend your license to others.
- Report collisions causing injury or damage over $2,000 to police.
- Carry proof of insurance, vehicle ownership, and valid driver’s license when driving.
Road Signs Interpretation
- No stopping, no parking, and no standing zones differ—know each sign.
- Red circles with slashes mean the action pictured is prohibited.
- Green circles grant permission for specific actions.
- Stop, yield, pedestrian, school zone, and railway crossing signs have specific required actions.
- Road narrows, right lane ends, divide highway starts/ends, and construction warnings indicate changes in road conditions.
- Diamond, HOV, bicycle, and slow-moving vehicle signs indicate reserved lanes or special vehicle rules.
Safe Driving & Emergencies
- In fog, use low beam headlights; never drive with just parking lights.
- If brakes fail, pump the brake, downshift, and use the parking brake.
- When tired, stop and rest rather than pushing through.
- Hydroplaning risk increases with worn tires, low pressure, or excess speed on wet roads.
- If tailgated, let the car pass and increase following distance.
Penalties & Licensing Rules
- Fines, demerit points, and suspensions apply for offenses like street racing, careless driving, failure to stop for school buses, using electronics, and impaired driving.
- G1/G2 drivers face stricter penalties and passenger restrictions.
- Notify the Ministry of Transportation of name/address changes within 6 days.
- Carrying people in towed trailers is prohibited.
Key Terms & Definitions
- No Stopping/Standing/Parking — levels of restriction on stopping your vehicle.
- BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration) — legal level for drivers; G1/G2 must be zero.
- Two-second rule — following distance guideline for safety.
- Hydroplaning — loss of tire grip on wet roads.
- HOV lane — high occupancy vehicle lane, for vehicles with multiple occupants.
Action Items / Next Steps
- Review the Ontario Driver’s Handbook for full details.
- Practice identifying and interpreting road signs.
- Complete any assigned practice tests before your G1 exam.
