Introduction

  • Condenser fan motor, also known as outdoor fan motor, is a frequently replaced air conditioning part.
    • 1st most replaced: Capacitor
    • 2nd most replaced: Contactor
    • 3rd most replaced: Fan motor
  • Subject to heat and weather, being a moving electrical part, it frequently fails.

Removing the Fan Motor

General Removal Process

  • Mounting: Different units have varied ways of mounting the motor.
    • Some require removing the entire top or just a section.
  • Tools: Avoid using power tools to prevent stripping screws.
    • Use hand tools to prevent damage.

Steps for Removal

  1. Remove four screws from the grille on top.
  2. Carefully detach the fan blade and motor assembly.
  3. Maneuver the wiring conduit carefully to avoid damaging the fan blade.
  4. If resistance is met, handle with care, do not yank.
  5. Check for grounding straps and remove if present.

Inspecting and Working on the Motor

Inspection

  • Check the blade for fatigue, damage, cracks, and oil spots.
    • Ensure blade integrity is intact.

Blade Removal

  • Loosen set screw on the blade hub.
  • Work the blade off using hand tools, sand the shaft, and apply oil to ease removal.

Installing a New Motor

Selection Criteria for New Motor

  • Match specifications with the old motor:
    • Voltage: 230 volts
    • Amperage: 1.4 amps
    • RPM: 1100 or 1075
    • Horsepower: 1/4 HP

Installation Process

  1. Prepare the new motor by comparing it with the old one.
    • Remove unnecessary studs using a hollow shaft nut driver.
  2. Determine the correct mounting and lead-end.
  3. Remove the appropriate weep hole cap for condensation drainage.
  4. Verify wiring: use a new capacitor as per motor's requirement.
    • Brown wires to capacitor, black and white to contactor.
  5. Ensure motor rotation is set properly (CWLE).

Rotation Adjustment

  • Test motor rotation by bumping contactor.
  • Adjust wiring for correct direction if needed.
  • Ensure wires are protected from sunlight and secured to avoid accidental contact.

Final Installation Checks

  • Confirm blade height matches factory settings to ensure proper airflow.
  • Cut excess motor shaft length using appropriate tools (hacksaw, saw, or grinder).
  • Verify blade clearance from wires.

  • Apply grease to the shaft post-installation to prevent rust.
  • Keep motor specs handy (amps, HP, RPM) for future reference.
  • Match fan blade specifications for replacement accurately.
