Introduction

Ecclesiastes is part of the Bible's wisdom literature.
Opens with: "The words of Kohelet, the son of David, king in Jerusalem."
Kohelet means one who gathers people to teach (translated as "teacher").
Possible identities of Kohelet:
- King Solomon
- Later king in David's line
- Later Israelite teacher adopting a Solomon-like persona
Distinction between teacher (character) and anonymous author.

Central message: Hevel, Hevel, everything is utterly Hevel.
- "Hevel" often translated as "meaningless," but more accurately means "vapor" or "smoke."
- Describes life as temporary, fleeting, enigmatic, and paradoxical.
- Life’s unpredictability and the sense of injustice.

Time and Death:
- Human achievements are temporary; time erases everything.
- Death is the great equalizer—wise or foolish, rich or poor, all die.
Life's Activities:
- Wealth, career, status, and pleasure: ultimately Hevel.
- Hard work leads to stress, and wealth may not be enjoyed.
- Pleasure is fleeting.
Wisdom and Fear of the Lord:
- Wisdom has advantages but doesn't guarantee a good life.
- Living by wisdom is also Hevel due to life's unpredictability.

Acceptance of Hevel:
- Acknowledging life's unpredictability.
- Enjoyment of simple, good things as a gift from God.

Teacher's words are like a "shepherd's staff with a goad" to guide us.
Don't overanalyze life's mysteries - you'll never fully solve them.
Author's conclusion: Fear God and keep His commandments.
- God's judgment provides true meaning to life.
- Hope in God's justice offers a foundation for living with honesty and integrity.
