Lecture Notes: Toyota RAV4 Battery Replacement

Tools Needed

  • Socket Wrench Tools
    • 3/8 Socket
    • 3-inch Extension
    • 10 mm socket (used for all battery-related components)
  • Other Tools
    • Open wrench

Battery Removal Process

  1. Safety First:
    • Always start by removing the negative terminal first to prevent electrical issues (similar to cutting power at a house).
    • Ensure terminals do not touch any metal parts.
  2. Remove Battery Holder:
    • Use a 10 mm socket to loosen the holder.
    • Backside does not need to be completely removed, just loosen sufficiently.
  3. Take Out Battery:
    • Lift and remove after loosening.
    • Be cautious of the metal bracket that holds the battery in place.

Installing the New Battery

  1. Place New Battery:
    • Align in the plastic holes to ensure stability.
    • Remove protective caps from the battery terminals.
  2. Preventative Measures:
    • Apply dielectric grease or terminal grease to prevent corrosion.
    • Note: Corrosion often occurs after 3+ years or in certain weather conditions.
  3. Mount Battery:
    • Reconnect to the metal side bracket.
    • Use original bolt to secure, tighten with 10 mm socket.
    • Ensure battery is sturdy and does not move.

Reconnecting the Terminals

  1. Positive Terminal First:
    • Attach and secure loosely, avoid over-tightening.
    • Ensure it is stable with a small wiggle.
  2. Negative Terminal Last:
    • Connect last to prevent sparks and ensure safety.
    • A small spark may occur; it's normal, especially if the car is on.
    • Tighten adequately without over-tightening.

Final Steps

  • Once both terminals are connected and secured, start the car to ensure the battery is functioning correctly.
  • Confirm all connections are stable and secured before completing the process.
