Pre-colonial Philippine Culture

[Music] hello good afternoon everyone we are the group 7 and for today we are just to discuss the pre-colonial period the dimensions to focus are the following architecture sculpture painting literature music and dance and lastly theater the pre-colonial period encompasses the time period proceeding the establishment of european colonization in various parts of the world filipinos developed their own civilization long before the spaniards arrived in the philippines these culture arose partially as a result of the malay settlers and partly as a result of their reaction to the new surroundings philippine pre-colonial art uses a variety of media techniques and procedures to portray nature and everyday life of the people based on aspects such as time climate resources ideas historical and cultural contexts despite changes brought by westernization and modernization many of these practices and traditions have survived to the present day in architecture the earliest examples of pre-colonial architecture in the philippines are rock shelters and caves in palawan the architectural landscape of the philippines is the contrast of small traditional cottages made of wood bamboo meepa grass and other indigenous materials early filipinos are pneumatic since they are constantly in search for food through hunting or fishing so they mainly rely on nature when creating shelter and do not need to build permanent structures first example is baha'i kobu the usual form of the houses is the baha'i kubo which is composed of indigenous materials and it has open space the baha'i kobo or nipahat is a typical traditional house found in most lowlands all over the philippines early filipinos are pneumatic since they are constantly in search for food through hunting or fishing so they mainly rely on nature when creating shelter and do not need to build permanent structures filipino artists are indigenous filipinos second example is kawaiian turogun a torogan is a typical house erected by the marino people of lanao mindanao philippines it means resting place or sleeping place a tour gun was regarded as a sign of high social standing a sultan or datto of the marino community previously live in such a house during at that time no one can have a house bigger than the tour gun which is the dwelling place of the datto along with his wives and children filipino artists are maranao people third example is the ifugao house the ifugao house is made of sturdy lumber from amagawa and trees and is supported by four posts dog 50 centimeters below ground level and secured with stones the four wooden posts that sit on the pavement's part two wooden girders and three wooden transverse joists their houses were harmoniously located with the counter of the rice traces the exterior of the house seems to be nothing but a pyramid resting in four posts while the interior space is enclosed by slanting walls and ceiling that appears to be spherical that are formed by the loft filipino artists are the infogauss and now we are bound to discuss the sculpture that can be found in our loving country which is the philippines the ancient philippines had attained a high artistic level through the aspects of battery jewelry and wood carving sculpture is a three-dimensional artwork created by shaping or combining hard materials typically stone such as marble metal glass or wood or any plastic material such as clay textiles polymers and softer metals carving is one of the techniques used in sculpture one of the examples of sculptures that can be found in the philippines is the bull bull is also known as tina gagu bull are used in ceremonies associated with rice production and with healing so why is it important difficult it is important if a gauss because they believed that they can protect and multiple the rice and make the harvest abundant they are carved from a single piece of food and depict humans with very unrealistic features among the different type of ifugao figurative sculptures the bulwoul are the most known and are the most abundant the filipino artist behind the bulul are the ifa girls the second example of the sculpture that can be found in the philippines is the hagabi hagabi is an unusual philippine hagabi of nara wood hagabi are traditionally large ceremonial benches carved for wealthy effigal families as a symbol of wealth power and prestige the bench serves as a symbol of prestigious hagabi feast in which the carving of the bench marks the beginning of the celebration the geometric bench are with stylist animal head ends i have a question was there an exemption to have this hagabi or who was the only allowed to have this agave only if a gao of the kadanyan or wealthy class were allowed to have hagabi and this small scale tool was likely carved for cutting an individual for use inside their home the filipino artists behind hagabi are the ifugaos the third and the last example of sculpture that can be found in the philippines is the manugol jar manukochar is a secondary burial jar excavated from a neolithic boreal site in the manukau cave of the taboon cave at leap one point in palawan philippines it dates from 890 to 710 bc two prominent figures at the top handle of its cover represent the journey of the soul to the afterlife the manungujar served as a proof of our common heritage with our austrian nation-speaking ancestors despite the diversity of cultures of the philippine people traces of their culture and beliefs were seen in different parts of the country and from different philippine ethno-linguistic groups the filipino artist behind the manual jar was not totally mentioned but as i researched the manual jar was discovered in a cave at least one point quezon palawan on march 1964 by a team of volunteer workers from the united states peace corps headed by victoria de cullen and hans casten philippine paintings artistic paintings were introduced to filipinos in the 16th century when the spaniards arrived in the philippines during this time the spaniards used paintings as visual aid for the religious propaganda to spread catalogism throughout the philippines the ancient filipino expressed paintings through tattoos and cave carvings here are some examples of filipino paintings the first one is the pintados or the painted ones prince giallo a tattooed tribal man was purchased as a slave in bindanao and became part of public exhibition in england making him a living artwork prince yellow is an example of a pinterest also or painted ones the pindados are inhabitants of the visayas islands as described by the first spaniards to set ice upon them and produce sharp metals instruments previously heated over fire the second one is the petroglyphs the angona preter grips is the oldest known artwork in the philippines there are 127 humans and animal figures engraved in the on the rock wall dating back 3000 bc and the last one is the sea loop this two bontok igor man with jack lag or the chest tattoo is an example of basilo where the tattooing imitate the upper garment worn by men of north kalinga while the woman in south carolina painted their face a bright red so next is literature if you are wondering what is literature ba so literature represents the culture and traditions of a language or a people so the concept of this are very difficult to define though many have tried it's clear that the only accepted definitions of literature is constantly changing now up until now and it is still evolving so the importance of pre-colonial philippines literature is to preserve the culture and their literatures or stories made by our ancestors up to the future readers so literature is the red then and sometimes spoken materials and it is also derived from a latin word which is writing form with letters so this photo is the example of the first filipino alphabet which is alibata or by buying so what are the characteristics of pre-colonial philippines literature so there are three examples oral traditions crude in ideology and physiology most of what we know pre-colonial literature deals with oral traditions so there are three examples first is riddle it is a statement or questions that propose a puzzles to be solved riddles generally have veiled meaning and might use figurative language or euphemism or even a sort bond in order to hide the true answer one of the examples of fritos is this one is so the correct answer is t-shirt number two is proverbs or salavika in in tagalog proverbs is a short saying that is widely used to express an obvious truth so example hindi lumingo and hindi makakara so in english a person who does not remember where he or she came from will never reach his or her destination then third is epics by pedro buccaneer the father of ilocano literature from 1592 to 1630 so epics are the narrative of sustained length based on the oral traditions around supernatural events or heroic deeds the pre-colonial music condenses of the philippines filipinos are naturally fond of music and dance and usually whenever music is played it is accompanied by dance especially today nanning social media of popular songs from tiktok the teens and also bisan maga batta musaya onya before filipinos already had rich musical and dance traditions so first let's see a few dances in a pre-colonial period first we have salip it is a courtship dance of the kalina people in this dance a warriors depicted claiming his bride by giving her a matrimonial blanket the radio offers a boy his protection pinagi sapagataks a girl or blanquette if kwa on gun is a babayan blanket it means the dance mimics the courtship rituals of the birds angitoko is a bird's thai rooster and dance movement salalaki is a male birds cat stirring uh like they flap their wings slip in the air spins around or jump to impress and to attract the female birds then the woman balances several clippers in her head and follows the man in action expressing submission up submission so let's watch the slip dance being performed [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the second one is the manor wap it is a rain ritual calling tradition dance of the buntaks or bunto people to ask their god called kabunyan to water the rice cirruses in the mountains the participants climb the mountain to reach a sacred place called fawe where they offer a piece of meat and some rice wine to kabunian and dancers must be physically strong enough to endure a ritual fast they are given only water and no food so for two days and two nights senior members of the tribe participating in the rain dance performing while with beating guns and farms with reigns also this tradition still alive in munto mountain province in spite of the digital age and modern religious conviction we will now proceed to the music kalalang a musical instrument which is a nose flute made from bamboo from the indian tribe it has holes caught in the side to be stopped by the fingers in producing the notes so it is very similar to typical flute however ang performer gamit niya yang ilong in here the player closes one nose rail with a bit of cotton and then forces the air from the other into a small hole caught in the end of the tube but probably nila para the moon and this instrument is popular with men as they use it in serenading their lady love now let us listen to the sound produced by kalalang [Applause] [Music] wow [Applause] so that's all for the pre-colonial music and dances of the philippines indigenous rituals verbal duels or games and songs and dances to thank gods were all types of theater in prehistoric periods in the philippines according to early reports prehistoric dramas contain three elements which is the myth nemesis and spectacle number one example of a theater in the philippines is epic poetry epic poetry which goes back to the pre-colonial period is considered the peak of filipino folk literature these epics which are mainly about love or adventure are frequently performed at festivals and events like weddings baptism and wakes singers have been known to go on stage for hours on the end biagni lamang the ilocano people's national epic is significant for being the first folk epic to be documented in literary form after being passed down from generation to generation our first example of an epic poetry is so it is a pre-colonial epic poem written by philippines ilokano people the narrative was told orally for decades before being written down in 1640 most likely by pedro buchanan a blind ilocano barn the second one is hud hood and alim it is a well-known epic that originated in the philippines ifugao province it tells the story of the ifugaos culture and traditions as well as their hero ali goyun and the last one is that the rangin of the maranao people it is an ancient epic ballad that highlights the marina people's richness of knowledge from the lake lana region of mindanao [Music] you
