welcome to part three of our tutorial video series on how to build an interactive dashboard using tableau in this video we will add our visualizations to the dashboard add filters to make it interactive and also learn how to add a context filter we will also format the dashboard and learn how to use the dashboard to drill down and answer questions let's get started first you will want to create a dashboard sheet you can add a dashboard sheet by clicking on the dashboard icon shown here you can also click on dashboard along the top of the screen and then click on new dashboard a dashboard shows a collection of views and will allow us to compare the data we prepared in the preceding sheet simultaneously to make our visualizations easier to view we want to first add containers into our dashboard these will help us to better organize our sheets and to arrange things evenly we can add both horizontal and vertical containers to our view let's begin by adding two vertical containers first you need to click on vertical under objects and drag this to your white area where it says drop sheets here to add a second container again click on vertical and then drag the container to the top or bottom of the sheet you will see a gray area where the second container will appear as you do here release the mouse button now we are going to add horizontal containers we will add three at the top and two at the bottom to add horizontal containers click on horizontal and then drag to the right or the left of your white space it will begin to look like it does here with the area turning gray right before you drop the container you can also drag the lines of each container to resize them once they are placed you can see here i now have added my containers both horizontally and vertically and resized them so that they are close to the same size i am now ready to begin adding visualizations to the dashboard the various sheets you have created in this workbook are listed on the left under sheets begin by clicking and dragging certain sheets onto the dashboard although we have created seven sheets we don't need all of these to convey our message across the top drag sales by year and quarter then category and then top 10 customers notice that the legends along with those visualizations came onto the dashboard since we do not need these just hit the x in the top right corner for each of those legends to make sure the dashboard takes up more of the screen you can go to dashboard and look at size notice the default size is one thousand by eight hundred change this to thirteen hundred by nine hundred next add sales by division map and total revenue by product line to the bottom containers the legends for these visualizations also populated onto the dashboard again click in the top right corner of each box where you see a pen icon and you can click the x to close these visually this looks pretty good now but i noticed that revenue by category is not taking up the entire container to fix this i can click the arrow and to the right click on fit and entire view you can now see i have adjusted the size of my visualizations to make it more appealing and easy to work with now i can make my dashboard interactive which means the users will be able to filter the data on demand and dig deeper into the underlying data quickly and easily to make the dashboard interactive you need to add filters to each of your visualizations so that as you click on certain criteria all of the visualizations will change to do this click on the top right side of the total sales by quarter and year visualization and then click on the filter icon repeat this for revenue by category sales by division map and sales by product line omit this for top customers and sales because we will not filter all of the other data based on a particular customer now that you have added these filters the information will change as you click on certain criteria in a visualization for example if you click on the year 2019 in the total sales by quarter and year visualization all of the other data changes in the other visualizations to clear the drill down for 2019 just double-click it as you click through though notice that there is a problem with the top 10 customers category currently the top 10 customers are calculated for cat manufacturing the entire company we want to know the top 10 customers for each division if you click on russia for instance notice that the top customers in sales disappear because none of the customers in russia are listed in the top 10 for sales for the entire company to fix this we need to add a context filter a context filter will filter the data for us to pull the top 10 customers by division to do this you need to go back to the top customers in sales sheets click on division and then click on add to context this will enable us to see the top 10 customers for each division you can now see that when i click on the russia division the top 10 customers for russia appear this will work for each of the divisions listed here you can now go back to your interactive dashboard here you can see this change on the dashboard also notice that as you rest your mouse over the dashboard a tooltip will appear tableau will create these for you automatically but you can also edit these to provide more information you can also click on more than one feature to drill down for example if i click on 2021 second quarter united states and materials processing i see that only three companies in the united states had orders for that category during the second quarter of 2021 and only five product lines were sold again if you double click on each of the items you selected it will bring the dashboard back to the original visualization as you can see the filters allow an end user to drill down into the underlying data and answer a variety of questions to finalize your dashboard i suggest adding a title to do this click on show dashboard title in the bottom left of your screen now you can edit the title and format it double-click on the title and a pop-up box will appear here you can edit the name and format it however you like i have chosen to increase the font size bold the title center it and make the color black here is a final picture of my completed interactive dashboard this concludes our tutorial video series on how to build an interactive dashboard in tableau this video was created and narrated by dr jennifer canis
