Exploring Wing Chun's Portrayal and Limitations

this is one of my favorite fight scenes ever Northern Style with beautiful large exaggerated movements like those at Charlene against Southern style Wing Chun minimalist low-key but it gets the job done one man against 10 karate black belts they jump they kick but they are no match against ipman his attacks are simple and direct and unburdened by the desire to impress anyone there can be no doubt Wang Chun is an effective martial art when Factory workers get continuously harassed by a group of gangsters who teaches them kids women and then yoren Wang Chon and that gives them at least a Fighting Chance it is a martial arts for all ages and genders with a focus on self-defense and a no-nonsense Approach at least that's the message that the ipman movie and Wing Chun schools try to convey and successfully so it got me to start practicing Wing Chun when I was 16. by the way are we starting to see a pattern here I watch a movie about the martial art and I learn it Charlotte movie gotta go to the Sheldon table for three years and get beaten by Sticks yeah I just I love movies and they always had a huge impact on me especially during my teens I'm probably not the only one anyways I want this video to be for all Wing Chun practitioners out there and those who are considering starting it or have a fascination with it I have five main points of critique and my friend Iman over here will accompany us along the way let's go in the beginning of the movie when this guy goes from school to school to challenge their masters to compare whose style is the best the movie's love for martial arts truly shines even showing off some really obscure Styles like xiaobachen which I have never heard of before round Snappy movements unlike anything I've seen in Charlotte Kung Fu forms and then we contrast that to the Ip Man fight his style immediately stands out as much more reserved it's almost comically minimalistic and any Wing Chun practitioner will be able to appreciate the attention to detail and skill displayed by Donnie Yen I'm not gonna try to speak in Cantonese but you have bang shot it is clean and I love it when people think of classic Kung Fu movies they think of Bruce Lee's big kicks Jackie Chan's crazy Antics and gently flying through the sky in other words kung fu is still associated with Showmanship it is just for sure it is not effective so when Wing Chun comes along no show no BS man doesn't even like fighting I'm not going to fight now please leave it once that is different and you see it reflected in a lot of Wing Chun schools look up some in your city I guarantee you Ming Chun is advertised in combination with self-defense very important a lot also mentioned how Wing Chun was developed by a woman physically much weaker than men she had to develop a different type of system that can ignore Brute Force by redirecting the enemy's attacks and focusing on minimal movement I heard Wing Chun was invented by a woman that suits you just fine it man during my first Wing Chun class I was told we don't believe in blocking attacks imagine your house other martial arts want to build a strong door but what if your attacker is stronger than your door he gets in so what we do is we open the door lead him through the house and then we kick him out and this almost pacifist attitude attracts the appropriate crowd many people practice having shown don't practice any other martial art they consider things like classic karate and Kung Fu useless well considering you know boxing and BJJ primitive and aggressive Wing Chun is The Sweet Spot it's a civilized style tasteful but effective the silent killer okay now we've arrived at the moment where I just have to rip off the Band-Aid all of that is just not accurate and here's my take 0.1 the idea that there is any combat sport or self-defense technique that can make a 50 kilo small lady fend off 120 kilo attacker is lying to you I know we all want that to be the case David versus Goliath the small one using their size to their advantage to outsmart in the giant you know Tom and Jerry like monkey Foreman Shaolin he's small and unsuspecting but his speed and technique gives him the edge it works great as a story but real life just doesn't work that way Mike Tyson vs IP man what a scene I love it it's epic but completely removed from reality of course they try to make boxing look like Brute Force but Wing Chun has technique wrong boxing is insanely Technical and after a liver shot like this it's game over bruh even Brazilian Jiu Jitsu where I would say wait matters the least relatively speaking to other martial arts it still doesn't matter that's why there are weight classes and competitions physique will always play a huge role anyone who has sparred before knows that even 5 to 10 kilos can make a world of difference but let's not forget Wing Chun is not a grappling or submission focused sport it's mostly striking elbows and some simple kicks weight matters a ton here let's take a look at the style itself Wing chun's approach of not blocking not learning how to move your head to dodge and slip not sparring but just doing forms and drills stiff footwork chain punches that are notoriously weak but badass almost no grappling no takedowns no ground game spell a world of trouble should you ever find yourself in a serious self-defense situation it is so far behind other tried and tested martial arts in almost every conceivable white shirt might work against an untrained unfit uncommitted attacker but some people still need to be reminded that real fights do not look like this and there's no difference whether you're looking at a minimalistic Hitman performance or extravagant Kung Fu or not Jackie Chan these are movie choreographies and that's okay I love Aesthetics I value them what do you think I trained so much it's beautiful but whether Wing Chun is for fighting is not even an interesting question for me we know what happens when people try to use Wing Chun and Wing Chun only to fight we've seen it it's over it's case closed and before anyone says but there are videos of Fighters using Wing Chun that are implementing it in some way yes I know these are Fighters with extensive experience in other fighting sports that is exactly what I'm saying Wing Chun can be a great supplementary martial art for people who are experienced in MMA who seek to diversify their palette so to speak there are some great techniques and drills in ringtone like sticky hands and principles of like minimal movement to maximum effect but you need to be already somewhat proficient in real fighting Sports in order to make use of them there's a great video by Sensei Seth about Wing Chun where he tries to make it work I cannot recommend it enough windshield Master Kevin Lee puts it very well here how do you take that piece of stuff and then combine something that you already know or maybe input element or maybe make something better even in China there's a very Lively debate that goes far beyond just on why a lot of traditional Kung Fu just gets destroyed in fights over and over again and they're gradually adjusting as well but self-defense is a different ball game so that leads me to point three uncle please stay and teach us Kung Fu you never know who has knives and when you see a knife comply or it's probably Hospital time if you're lucky no matter how good you are you might freeze or be in a set of shock because it can happen so fast and out of the blue you don't know how many attackers there do you have space is it night time are you wearing the right clothes and shoes are there Witnesses who can back you self-defense situations come in all shapes and sizes there are no rules and are always potentially life-threatening martial arts cannot prepare you for any of that and if you only practice Wing Chun you probably look like this when something goes down even some people who have been training a lot of Applied Combat Sports I think that would apply to me too when push comes to shove training can fly out the window and panic survival mode sets in but I'm getting at here sure Combat Sports improve your odds but I'd say about 80 to 90 of keeping yourself away from harm the very point of self-defense is violence prevention one of the great true points of The Karate Kid movie best advice are the ones we avoid learning how to detect avoid and de-escalate dangerous situations that's what matters nobody wants to hear that sounds boring because you want to fight but that's how you stay safe so if we have a martial art like Wing Chun then advertise itself for protecting your life no matter how little you weigh it will give you a false sense of security and confidence let me put it like this if you take more risks because you think you're good at Wing Chun Wing Chun has now put you in a worse position 0.4 this one goes beyond the art itself Wing Chun has become an incredibly exploited martial art that's been put through the ringer by a lot of you know different uh very greedy and desperate individuals people are trademarking their own ways of spelling Wing Chun and saying that's now their style and nobody else is allowed to use that spelling I truly hope that never happens to Shaolin or it's just game over imagine if someone trademarked Kung Fu and now nobody else can use it and they have to come up with their own demented way of spelling it King King few and these organizations they all hate each other they bad mouth each other the Headmasters claim to have been trained by the last real descendant of authentic Wing Chun then my uncle was taught by ipman's Third cousin's stepfather married twice adopted Second Son it's a politics and drama-filled kindergarten it's one of the worst examples of an art being destroyed by business the channel martial arts Journey made an interesting video on exactly this issue I recommend you watch it I approached one group and started making a conversation soon they turned the subject to discussing the other evil organization known as wingtun I wasn't a big fan of this talk so I moved on to engage with another group yet soon enough the subject turned out to be the same a discussion on how fake the other organization was and last but not least 0.5 how Wing Chun is taught for a martial art that claims to be so Praxis oriented there is a shockingly small amount of actual spark it is still mostly a drill and form focused style this year is a kung fu movies version of sparring this move attacks the mid-ribs it's really strong stop for citing Theory and just hit your target that's not real sparring and Wing Chun classes don't do that and isn't that just so convenient that you can practice defending yourself against an attacker without having to spar please just stop no martial art can claim it's practical or useful without putting it to the test in scenarios that at least attempt you know to approximate real life as much as possible all of wing chun's great foundational ideas are worth nothing if they fail in real life and in addition to that I remember this from my own school and when I see videos of these uh very expensive Wing Chun seminars that people attend that the Masters are extremely ego driven irresponsible and engaged in a lot of self aggrandizing Behavior not humble like ipmann which is a sweet potato there are a few videos I really want to show but I can because I hear that these organizations are very litigious but the students you know are forming a circle sometimes sitting and then the Masters in the center showing off a drill or a move and shoves the students into the crowd where the others have to catch them sometimes all people whatever they fall what if they hurt themselves how do the students react wow so badass he's so cool he just doesn't care this is unprofessional pathetic and disgusting behavior and when you're showing off a move against an untrained opponent a student who's paying you who doesn't fight back and is there to learn and then you shove them into the crowd or hurt them you're in my eyes just a low life on a power trip but as you know I don't like to end a video on a negative note please remember if you have fun training Wing Chun and that's why you like it it's fun then forget everything I said it is absolutely fair to train something because you just enjoy it and it makes you happy same goes for my game reviews who cares if I give a game a five six seven whatever don't let anyone argue you out of your own personal enjoyment of something I want to put people on a positive self-defense or martial arts trajectory and being interested in Wing Chun can be a valid first step I did Wing Chun after watching The Man movie then I went on to Charlotte Kung Fu Judo and BJJ so here's my recommendation to those Wing Chun practitioners out there who are still listening the one guy or girl attend one single boxing just one don't worry they won't eat you don't even go in with the mindset that you want to continue it just check it out I promise you it'll change your perspective and if it won't make you quit windshield altogether it'll definitely make you a much better Wing Chun practitioner so the next time you watch tapeman movie enjoy it for what it provides great fight scenes and an uncompromising love for Wing Chun there's nothing wrong with that it has its place just not in any self-defense curriculum okay I hope you enjoyed this video finally I got my opinion on being tuned out in a proper video I really like doing these Kung Fu reviews and giving you know my personal perspective on these things if you want to see more let me know in the comments and check out the video I made on The Karate Kid movie with Jackie Chan and Jane Smith by the way I love that movie or my crazy Resident Evil 4 remake review time have a great week and uh Antonio [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music]
