Steps for Setting Up Alaris Pump

Selecting and Preparing Tubing

  1. Select Alaris Primary Tubing:

    • Open the package.
    • Ensure the clamp is open, then close it.
  2. Spiking the Bag:

    • Hold the bag, pull the tab off while maintaining sterility.
    • Insert the spike into the bag with a twisting motion.
    • Hang the bag on the hook.
    • Squeeze the drip chamber until it is halfway full.
  3. Priming the Tubing:

    • Loosen the cap at the end of the tubing slightly.
    • Open the clamp slowly to let the fluid run through, removing all air bubbles.

Using the Alaris Pump

  1. Turning on the Pump:

    • Locate "system on" at the corner and press the button.
    • Respond to prompts:
      • New patient? → Yes
      • Med surg patient? → Yes
    • Enter patient ID and confirm.
  2. Loading the Tubing:

    • Open the pump door.
    • Insert the tubing into the pump (blue filter should be below, click into place).
    • Gently close the door.
  3. Selecting the Channel and Infusion Type:

    • Choose channel (e.g., channel A) using "channel select."
    • Choose infusion type:
      • Options: Guardrail drugs, Guardrails IV fluids, or Basic infusion.
      • For this session, select Basic infusion.
  4. Setting Infusion Parameters:

    • Physician's order for normal saline: 100 mL/hr.
    • VTBI (Volume To Be Infused): Set at 900 mL.
    • Ensure all clamps are open.
    • Press "Start" on the main screen.
  5. Labeling the Tubing:

    • Label for future reference on when to change tubing (typically 72 to 96 hours).

Back Priming and Secondary Infusion

Preparing Secondary Tubing

  1. Open and Prepare Secondary Tubing:

    • Open package, close clamp.
    • Hang cefazolin 2 grams and prime the tubing while maintaining sterility.
  2. Connecting Secondary Tubing:

    • Select a port above the pump.
    • Cleanse with alcohol prep pad for 15 seconds.
    • Connect tubing to the port and secure it.
  3. Filling and Setting Up the Pump:

    • Pause the pump and fill secondary tubing.
    • Select "Channel Select" and press "Secondary."
  4. Administering Medication:

    • Choose cefazolin 2000 mg.
    • Confirm the dosage and amount in mL.
    • Set the duration for infusion (e.g., 30 minutes).
    • Rate will be automatically calculated (e.g., 100 mL/hr).
  5. Starting the Infusion:

    • Ensure clamps are open.
    • Press "Start" and verify medication is dripping.
