Hello everyone, I'm Leonie Irina Mutiara of Bukor Vocational School of Chemical Analyst. Let's study together with me. Present perfect tense, simple past tense. Do you know the differences?
Let's check this video. Present perfect tense is used to show unfinished actions that started in the past and continue to the present. For example, I have known Julie.
for 10 years. I started to know Julie 10 years ago, and I still know her until now. We still keep in touch, and the duration of our relationship is 10 years.
Simple past tense is used to show finished actions. For example, I knew Julie for 10 years. I started to know Julie sometime in the past.
But then she moved away and we lost touch. The duration of our relationship is 10 years. And I know nothing about her now.
Present perfect tense is used to tell a finished action in someone's life and the person is still alive, meaning that the person still has opportunities to repeat that action in the future. For example, my brother... has been to Mexico three times. My brother went to Mexico in the past, and because he is still alive, so he can go to Mexico again now or someday in the future.
Simple past tense. This used to tell a finished action in someone's life when the person is dead, so the action cannot be repeated in the present and future time. It is all finished. For example, my great-grandmother went to Mexico three times.
Now, she has passed away. Before she died, she went to Mexico three times in the past. But, she cannot go to Mexico again now and in the future. Present perfect tense is for a past action with a consequence in the present. For example, I have lost my keys.
It happened in the past, but now I am still searching for it, and the consequence is that I cannot get into my car now. Simple past tense is for a past action with no consequence in the present. For example, I lost my keys yesterday.
It happened in the past, but now... I have no problem with the keys anymore. I found it this morning. So, I can get into my car.
There is no consequence in the present time anymore. Some time signals for present perfect tense are this week, this month, today, for, already, yet, recently. before, since, many times, and just. And some time signals for simple past tense are last week, yesterday, in 2008, last month, a week ago, at 10 am, two days ago, and last year. To make a present perfect tense we use subject, plus have or has, plus past participle.
For example, she has watched the movie. To make it negative, add not after have or has. To make it introgative, move the have or has to the beginning of the sentence. To make a simple past, we use subject plus simple past verb. For example, they went to Jakarta yesterday.
To make it negative, use did not and base verb. The base verb of went is go. To make it interrogative, move the did to the front and still use the base verb.
