Tener Verb Conjugation and Usage

Hola. In this video lesson, we'll cover yet another verb that's irregular in the preterite, tener. Tener means to have. Remember how in the present tense, it's changed like this. Yo tengo.

Tú tienes. Él tiene. Ella tiene.

Usted tiene. Nosotros tenemos. Nosotras tenemos. Ellos tienen. Ellas tienen.

Ustedes tienen. Some examples. Yo tengo mucha tarea. Silvia y Carlos tienen mucha ropa. Now, in the preterite, yo tuve, tú tuviste, él tuvo, ella tuvo, usted tuvo, nosotros tuvimos, nosotras tuvimos, ella tuvimos.

Ellos tuvieron. Ellas tuvieron. Ustedes tuvieron.

Those examples again. Yo tengo mucha tarea. I have a lot of homework. Yo tuve mucha tarea. I had a lot of homework.

Silvia y Carlos tienen mucha ropa. Silvia and Carlos have a lot of clothes. Silvia y Carlos tuvieron mucha ropa.

Silvia and Carlos had a lot of clothes. Now, how about you change the following from the present tense into the preterite tense. Yo tengo. Yo tuve.

Ellos tienen. Ellos tuvieron. Ella tiene. Ella tuvo. Nosotros tenemos.

Nosotros tuvimos. Víctor tiene. Víctor tuvo.

Tú tienes. Tú tuviste. Usted tiene.

Usted tuvo. Ellas tienen. Ellas tuvieron. Okay?

Now, change the following from English to Spanish. Okay? Now, I'll give you some sentences in English. Translate them into Spanish.

Pause the video if you need more time. Use the word bank and conjugation chart as well if you need to. Javier had a lot of homework. Javier tuvo mucha tarea. I had a date on Friday.

Yo tuve una cita el viernes. We had to take out the trash. Nosotros tuvimos que sacar la basura. Maria and Carmen had an accident. María y Carmen tuvieron un accidente.

Did you not have time? ¿No tuviste tiempo? They had to clean their room.

Remember, if you're obligated to do something, we would use tener plus que, plus an infinitive. So this would be, Ellos tuvieron que limpiar su cuarto. That's it for now with Tenere and the Preterite.

Hopefully this was helpful. Let me know if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions about this video. Gracias y adios.
