GCSE Language Paper 1 Exam Strategies

hey guys and welcome back to yet another GCSE revision lesson now I've got Mr Sally's here and we're going to be going over the language paper one exam and the top five tips I would suggest for answering all five questions however Mrs Sally's will also be giving his top five tips because there's different styles of learning I know that some of my tips will resonate with some of you guys but of course some of his tips will resonate with other different types of Learners so with that being said let's have a look at language paper one okay so when it comes to paper one Mrs Sally's how does it laid out oh right well you know you've got five questions uh the traditional route is you do them in question order which you can do the first four assess your reading and the fifth one assesses your writing so we're going to give you the advice we would give for each question and let's see which advice you prefer don't stress about the fact that it's different because like First Rate told you everyone's got a different way of learning now when it comes to question number one you've got four statements as well four marks my suggestion is start with that question warm yourself up write a minimum of four statements just make sure you don't write one word responses yeah I'd agree with that um question one Almost Doesn't Count four marks as hardly anything the average Mark nationally is 3.5 which means even people who haven't done any revision are still going to get really good marks on it just get it over with get yourself into the exam and relaxed now with question number two this is the language question you're usually given a section of the question to read and write language points on now my suggestion is when you're answering this question make sure you write a minimum of two pill paragraphs where you select a bit of evidence from the beginning of that section and a bit of evidence from either the middle or the end in terms of language points to raise these are the top five language techniques you'll find in any language paper one exam simile metaphor alliteration pathetic fallacy and of course also hyperbole those are the language techniques I would suggest looking for and to answer the Troublesome sentence forms and sentence structure bullet point just mentioned that one of the bits of evidence that you use is a declarative sentence so aim to write at least two people paragraph Point evidence explanation link times two for question number two okay my advice is very slightly different so the the features that I look for well you don't have to personification similarly metaphor alliteration and sibilance those are the five that I find come up all the time and what you've got from remember is this extract is going to be absolutely crammed full of language devices that's why the examiners have chosen it for you they really want to just give you the marks where students go wrong in this is they just don't write enough so although writing in paragraphs will help you structure your answer I prefer to tell students look there ain't marks going you've got to write eight separate points to get the a marks you can do that in two ways you can write eight explanations sorry you can write eight quotes with an explanation for each one or you can write four quotes with two explanations for each one it doesn't matter which approach you choose but as long as you're saying eight separate things interpreting these quotations you're going to get the marks revolutionarily I'm also recommending that you actually write each point separately so that the examiner can't disagree that you've made eight points whereas if you put your information in paragraphs to examine are allowed to disagree and AQA say that's cool we don't care just whatever you think is right and they won't change that Mark on appeal but if you put eight points with explanations it'd be really difficult for them not to give you a marks now for question number three which is the structure question again my Approach because it's worth eight marks just like question number two is write two peel paragraphs however in your first little paragraph my suggestion is contrast how does a writer begin the extra versus how the writer ends the extra I find something from the beginning in order to make sure you answer the first bullet point correctly because you're always awesome at the beginning of the extract and then find something to juxtapose it with from the end of the extra that means you need to add two bits of evidence in your first cool paragraph now your second structure question could be either related to for instance a sentence type which Uncle question declarative sentence or whatever or find a really interesting form of listing or repetition and use that as your second peel paragraph so I love that advice especially making sure you deal with the beginning and the end because examiners want to see that you're answering the full question in the top of the mark scheme so however many points you make in the middle you can sort of fudge but if you've got the beginning and the end then you're going to get really great marks the other thing that they really try to do is to give you something with a circular structure so they look really hard for an extract where the ending will kind of reflect back on the beginning so you can always mention a circular structure it's like 99 I hope guaranteed to come up the other thing that the examiners do is they just want this one phrase from you the writer focuses on blah blah blah blah blah because and even if you wrote that eight times the writer changes the focus too because blah blah blah you would get the marks you don't need to bury your vocabulary on that and they really just want you to think why is the writer showing me this now and that's really easy the writer tells you how they put each new focus in a new paragraph so all you have to do is follow the paragraphs comment about each one if you've got time you want to get to eight remembering the first is the most important and the last is the second important and all second most important and all the others are just going to squeeze in according to your time limit you can get a great if you can't don't flex don't flex don't worry now for question number four contradict what's going on in the extracts and you ask it's really having read this said blah blah blah blah what extent do you agree my Approach is always agree and write four pill paragraphs stating why you agree make them a mix of language question two and structure question three just make sure you don't recycle the same points from what you've used question number two and three but just make sure it's just a nice balance of language and structure points okay also question four is a tough one because it is 20 marks and that demands a lot of writing so you have to make as many points as you can I think students find this advice quite hard so your idea of writing peel paragraphs is probably going to resonate with more people and I I will also get you to write in paragraphs but you've got to think there are 20 marks I've got to make 20 points and how do you do that you're just going to agree and then at the end you're going to partially disagree the reason for the partial disagreement is because you want to evaluate and to evaluate you've got to weigh things up you know on the one hand this and on the one hand that so you need a partial disagreement to get the very top marks although the examiners say no we can give you evaluation even if you just completely agree but I'm just a little scared of that idea it's challenging because you really do have to write at speed to write 20 points and the main bit of advice is like forget what's going to go in here just right enough to score the marks and because the examiners never take away marks in language or the reading paper they never take a moments or anything that you do that's wrong like you can afford to write something that's rubbish at speed in order to get to something that's good and they'll just Mark what's good finally question number five where half of the overall papers marks you always get a choice of two questions you've got a creative writing question and a descriptive writing question my advice is always go for the creative writing question okay so go for the story and I would suggest follow the story Mountain structure write five paragraphs starting off in the beginning setting the scene build up your character goes on an adventure problem what obstacle they face resolution how do they resolve that problem and ending either end of the Cliffhanger or end with an interesting and unexpected ending however make sure it's not I woke up and it was all a dream so that would be my suggestion for question number five how about you could I have a pen to do the mountain just pass me a pen so I agree all of that but I know not that I'm gonna write I'm here thank you very much right so here's our have I got the story mountain right yes yeah and so here we've got the crisis and then here we've got the resolution and I can't spell resolution in such a small space but this is my slightly different take on it everything that you put in here is actually not going to be as interesting to the reader as that bit and so really what I'd say is start there that should be the start and get the reader to catch up so you start in the middle of the action or the middle of a conversation or the middle of a disaster and the reader is like immediately in it's like a perfect trailer for any film that you've ever been to you never get any of this bit you get straight in at a crisis so you're invested to do that though you've got to be able to slow down time so that the resolution doesn't come too quickly and that means you've got to be able to focus in on details and focusing on character but guess what when you do that you write interesting sentences and the examiners go oh that was very good I'm going to give it a high mark thank you so much Mr salsa of course there's always different ways to approach all five questions and I hope based on our preachers you've gotten something valuable from this and I agree thank God for that now I expect your desperate to work out how to approach language paper two and first-rate tutors and I have got you covered as usual you'll get two different perspectives to fit whichever kind of learner you are so for our very top advice for 2023 check out the video coming up next no check it out now
