Overview of App Management

  • Types of Applications Supported:
    1. Web Apps:
      • Shortcuts to web URLs
      • Published on Windows (shortcut in Start menu) and iPads (icon on home screen)
    2. Store Apps:
      • Microsoft Store for Education and Apple App Store
      • Free apps or Volume Purchase Program (VPP) apps for bulk licensing
    3. Windows Desktop Apps:
      • Traditional Line of Business (LOB) applications (MSIs) not recommended anymore
      • Focus shifting to Win32 applications
      • Integrated deployment for Microsoft first-party applications (e.g., Microsoft 365 apps, Edge)

Application Deployment

  • Deployment Methods:
    • Applications assigned to security groups
    • Installed on managed devices based on user or device groups
  • Types of Application Installations:
    • Mandatory Applications:
      • Automatically installed without user intervention
    • Optional Applications:
      • Published to users via the company portal for self-service installation
  • Education Focus:
    • Prioritize ease of use by making all applications mandatory by default

Ways to Manage Applications

  1. Express Configuration:
    • Wizard to select security group and settings/applications for deployment
  2. Groups View:
    • View and edit applications assigned to a specific group
  3. Apps View:
    • View, modify assignments of existing applications, or define new applications

Demo Overview

  • Demo Goals:
    • Deploy web apps, store apps, and Microsoft 365 apps and Edge
    • Use VPP apps from Microsoft Store for Education and Apple School Manager
  • Devices Enrolled for Demo:
    • iPad and Windows device (enrollment covered in Module 6)

Managing Apps in Intune for Education

  • Express Configuration Method:
    • Choose a group and select an app for installation
  • Groups Method:
    • Deploy applications to the "All Devices" group
    • Edit apps and select specific apps for deployment
  • Apps View:
    • Access the list of all defined applications
    • Assign specific applications to multiple security groups
    • Create new applications (Web, Microsoft Store, Desktop, iOS)

Application Assignment Process

  • Store App Example (Minecraft Education Edition):
    • Target offline licensed apps for shared devices to ensure immediate availability for new users
  • Company Portal App:
    • Allows self-servicing for students
  • Assigning Apps:
    • Assign apps to groups and ensure correct licensing types are selected

Key Points to Remember

  • If deselecting applications in Intune, an uninstall will be triggered on devices
  • Summary of apps deployed includes one web app, four Windows apps, and three iOS VPP apps
