Basics of Telling Time in French

in this video I'm going to keep it super simple and explain to you how to tell the time in French so here's a clock but of course in order to do that you're going to need to know your numbers from 1 to 60 at least and why is that because in France we use the 24-hour clock clock can't say it okay let's have a look at my clock so I've got a few clocks for you but the first one is all about numbers from 1 to 12. so we are going to name it the clock of the morning and we need to answer this question which basically means what hour is it or what time is it you can also say to this you will answer this and then give me the number as in the time and add ER now today we are keeping it really simple we are not doing minutes okay if it is in the morning you would say for example this ill it is one o'clock here is feminine okay we do not put an S in this case because there is only one hour however the S on Earth will come for every other numbers so let's have a look at this can you tell me what time it is uh-huh and then you put the number in between here [Music] and then you carry on set so what happens when you reach 12 as in midday in this case okay this is not midnight it's midday well it is midi midi in that case you do not put ER at the end of it so you would say quite simply a midi midi so this is the simplest clock of course we're not going into details I did say the beginning it was going to be super simple there will be another video for the more complex clock now let's have a look at the afternoon now so we are in the afternoon so the afternoon we are going to call it MIDI and the reason why I want you to know the afternoon is because then we start counting in the 24th hour okay clock so you need your numbers up to 24 basically okay so we have midi here after midday we start counting in the 24 hour clock so one o'clock becomes 13. so same concept here do you see what I'm doing foreign but you do not say instead you say here you go so let's have a look at one could you tell me the time till now remember all you have to do is put the number in between e and ER so here we go and this is when knowing your number numbers is very important now remember here in this video numbers from 1 to 24 is perfect but if you want to add the minutes then I would like you to learn your number up to 60. let's have a look at something else which I think you should know in this video it's how do we say quarter past or quarter two or half past okay here we're going to keep it simple and use only the numbers from 1 to 12. after that from 12 to 24 we do not apply this okay so for example we want to say it is quarter past one how are we going to do that it is quarter past one well basically in France in French laughs you're going to put a quarter here okay can you see that's my natural quarter and you're going to say the time normally the way we've learned it let's say it's one o'clock but you want to add a quarter to it well and a quarter so what you do here you say can you see what we've done so you do the same for 2 15 or quarter past two you would say ill and do sir is okay but if you want to say it's quarter two okay so which is different I'm going to use pink um just for there you go so whereby you have this one adding on a quarter here we are minusing a quarter if that makes sense okay so we would say minus the quarter okay so here we go how would you say it is quarter to one so I'm going to put the clock here okay so it's not quite one o'clock in it but it's one o'clock minus a quarter okay in English you would say it's quarter two one in French we would say it's one o'clock minus a quarter so we would say ill and here again [Music] okay minus a quarter okay of course there are other ways of saying the you know quarter past and uh 15 2 or quarter two but that's another lesson and I did say that's another lesson completely so let's have a look at this could you tell me what time it is now here we go so start with the time our very good let's have a look at another example could you tell me what time it is now so here we can see it's quarter to four but how would you say it in French quite simply yes okay that's really really good I know it's a quite a complex uh subject actually telling the time now here is another thing and I want to finish that how do you say half past okay for example it's half past two well in French we say the same as the quarter so you add you add okay so you would say it is two hours and a half and and I'm going to use maybe orange for that and a half so we'd say a dummy and the half literally [Music] okay okay so I'm going to stop here but finish with this one can you tell me what time it is now have a look at this one there could you finish with this one and leave it in the comments that would be interesting yeah I'm not going to say I want to but I won't the answer will be in the comments of course this is as you said at the very beginning a very simple explanation of how to tell the time in French if you want the full lesson on telling the time and the intricacy of French time then of course I've got everything in my course learn French with alisa.com there is a support guide available with this lesson so please do not hesitate to download it if you join my channel that's it for me
