Cystoclysis Continuous Male Bladder Irrigation Procedure

Initial Preparations

  • Gather Supplies: Ensure all necessary materials and equipment are ready.
  • Hand Hygiene: Perform to maintain aseptic conditions.
  • Verify Doctor's Order: Confirm procedure requirements.
  • Patient Identification: Use two identifiers to verify patient identity.
  • Bed and Patient Positioning:
    • Raise bed to appropriate working height.
    • Lower side rails.
    • Ensure patient is in a supine position.
    • Expose catheter junction.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear appropriate PPE as needed.

Setup of Irrigation

  • Fluid Bags:
    • Hang two bags of irrigation fluid on an IV pole or pneumatic pole.
  • Tubing Preparation:
    • Close clamp on new irrigation tubing.
    • Insert the tip of the tubing into the irrigation solution bag using aseptic technique.
    • Open clips but keep roller clamps closed.
    • Fill the drip chamber half full by squeezing it.
    • Open roller clamp to allow solution to flow, keeping the tubing tip sterile.
    • Once tubing is full, close roller clamp and recap tubing with the provided cap.

Procedure Execution

  • Hand Hygiene: Perform again to maintain sterility.
  • Flow Rate Regulation: Ensure the flow rate is correctly set.
  • Drainage Management:
    • Empty the drainage bag as needed for proper outflow.
    • Calculate drip rate if not specified by physician.
  • Observation:
    • Monitor outflow of fluid into drainage bag.
    • Empty drainage bag as necessary.

Post-procedure

  • Documentation: Record the procedure details and provide necessary health teaching.
  • Hand Hygiene: Perform to conclude the procedure.
  • Assessment:
    • Continuously assess urine volume and appearance.
    • Monitor for urinary retention and bladder distension.
  • PPE Removal: Remove PPE as needed.
