Gantt Chart Tutorial Notes

Introduction

  • Use Gantt charts to visualize project timelines, recognize conflicts, and manage dependencies.
  • Accessible from the DMAIC menu (Defined section), Standard menu (Planning section), or via Search.

Creating a Gantt Chart

  • Opening the Template: Click 'Launch' to open a new tab.
  • Setup: Enter a title and select work week days (default is Monday-Friday).
  • Click 'Create' to start.

Adding Items

  • Click 'Add Item' to add tasks.
  • Item Types:
    • Task: Default type; connects with other tasks, has start date & duration.
    • Other types: To be discussed later.
  • Task Creation:
    • Set start date and duration.
    • Save task.

Editing Tasks

  • Edit Options:
    • Use icon or double-click on task bar to edit.
    • Inline editing by clicking on column values.
    • Assignee can be updated via column.
  • Drag and Drop:
    • Adjust start and end dates by dragging bars.
    • Reorder tasks by dragging.
    • Drag task onto another for nesting (creates parent-child relationship).
    • Edit parent task in editing window.

Managing Time Frames

  • Change Gantt chart scale via dropdown (options: day, week, month, quarter, year).

Dependencies

  • Create by dragging between task bars.
  • Adjusting earlier task affects dependent task.

Completion Levels

  • Indicate task completion by dragging a small triangle on the task bar.

Projects and Nested Tasks

  • Project Item:
    • Acts like a folder.
    • Duration depends on included tasks.
    • Drag tasks in/out, adjust project duration.
  • Milestone:
    • A date without duration; marks point-in-time.

Critical Path

  • Enabling Critical Path:
    • Located in top right corner, under tag icon.
    • Shows tasks that if delayed, affect entire project.
  • Milestones and tasks in project items included in critical path calculation.
