Lecture Notes: Body Cavities

Introduction

  • The body is organized into compartments known as body cavities.
  • Body cavities house specific organs and serve to:
    • Protect organs
    • Provide space for organ function
  • Analogy: Body is like a house with rooms, each having specific functions.

Functions of Body Cavities

  • Protection: Cavities have strong, fibrous walls, e.g., thoracic cavity is protected by ribcage and muscles.
  • Space for Function: Allows organs to expand and contract as needed, e.g.,
    • Heart: Requires space to contract and pump blood.
    • Lungs: Change size with respiration.
    • Stomach & Bladder: Expand when filled.

Serous Membranes

  • Line body cavities and organs, producing serous fluid for lubrication.
  • Key Serous Membranes:
    • Pericardium: Surrounds the heart.
    • Pleura: Associated with the lungs.
    • Peritoneum: Associated with abdominal organs.

Layers of Serous Membranes

  • Parietal Layer: Lines the cavity wall.
  • Visceral Layer: Covers the organ itself.

Major Body Cavities

Dorsal Cavity

  • Includes:
    • Cranial Cavity: Houses the brain, lined by cranial meninges.
    • Vertebral Cavity: Houses the spinal cord, lined by spinal meninges.

Ventral Cavity

  • Divided into:
    • Thoracic Cavity (above diaphragm)
    • Abdominopelvic Cavity (below diaphragm)

Thoracic Cavity

  • Pleural Cavities: House the lungs.
    • Lined by pleura (visceral and parietal layers).
  • Mediastinum: Central compartment.
    • Superior Mediastinum: Contains large vessels, trachea, esophagus.
    • Inferior Mediastinum: Contains the heart in the pericardial cavity.
    • Pericardial Cavity: Houses the heart, lined by pericardium.

Abdominopelvic Cavity

  • Divided into:
    • Abdominal Cavity: Contains digestive organs, extends from diaphragm to top of pelvic bones.
    • Pelvic Cavity: Contains reproductive organs, rectum, and bladder, located within pelvic bones.

Peritoneal Cavity

  • Within the abdominopelvic cavity, lined by peritoneum.
  • Retroperitoneal Space: Behind the peritoneum, contains organs like pancreas, kidneys.

Conclusion

  • Understanding of body cavities is crucial for understanding organ location and function.
  • Next session will explore further division of the abdominopelvic region.
