Bonjour and hello everybody this is Deepti Directoris of Here and Now The French Institute. I welcome you to another episode. In today's video let's look at Lamparatti or in French voyons l'imperatif.
If you noticed I used the imperative mode in that sentence. Confused? Let me explain. In this video we will be looking what l'imperatif is, how to form it and where to use it. So let's begin.
What is l'imperatif? L'imperatif is called a mode or mode in English. In French just like conditional and the casual. indicative or subjunctive is a mode. In short, l'imperative is a way of expressing an instruction, an order or an advice.
Note, in this video, we are only looking at l'imperative in the present tense. Let's take the verb parler which means to speak in English. In the present tense, the verb parler is conjugated in the following way. In the Antiquities, the verb Présent, it is conjugated as Je parle, Tu parles, Il parle, Elle parle, Nous parlons, Vous parlez, Il parle, Elle parle. Whereas, parler in the imperative présent is conjugated only for three persons.
Second person singular, parle. First person, Laurent. Hello. And... second person plural parler.
Let's look at Antikajik. When we conjugate it, it changes according to the subject and the mode. So in the sentence, nous parlons.
Nous is a subject and parlons is the conjugated form of the verb. It is in the indicative mode and in imperative, it becomes parlons. In the imperative mode, we conjugate the verb according to the subject. we don't have this subject in the sentence.
For example, let's look at some sentences in the indicative mode and turn them into imperative. Tu attends? Attends.
Nous partons. Vous allez? Allez.
See what I mean? We conjugate it according to the subject but we don't add the subject in the sentence. How to form l'amperative? Amperative is formed only with the to, no and v. vvoo form of the verb.
This is because it is used only when we are talking to someone else or addressing ourselves in a group. Now let's look at the conjugation of l'imperative. Like I said, the subject is not added.
The endings for regular verbs are as follows. Verb o-r, o. O-N-S-E-Z Verb I-R, I-S, I-D-S-E-Z And verb R-E, S-O-N-S-E-Z Please note, for the two conjugation, we don't add the S for ER verbs, which is usually added in the indicative present tense for ER verbs. Let's look at some examples. Allons à la classe.
Let's go to the class. Écoutez votre prof. Listen to your professor. Morsh de legume Eat your vegetables Finishe vos devoirs Finish your homework And finally, when to use the imperative. Imperative is used when we have to give orders, instructions, advice or warnings.
Example, don't smoke. No fume pa. Here we use imperative in negative.
The roots for negation are the same in imperative. That is, we add a no before the verb and pa after the verb. Come with me.
Come with me. Don't touch the stove. Ne touche pas la cuisinière. In the no form, it is used as an equivalent for saying let's.
For example, let's go for a movie. Avant pour un film. Let's learn French.
Apprenons le français. As you can see, in the situations where we use imperative, it is not possible to give orders and suggestions in the first person, je, or the third person, singular, il, elle, or plural, il, elle. That is why we only use abba haji in the tu, nu and vu forms. Well, that's it for the lesson today.
