Indicators of a Chemical Reaction and Rates of Reaction
Overview
- Chemical reactions involve the transformation of substances (reactants) into new substances (products).
- Reactions occur all the time in our environment, often unnoticed.
Indicators of a Chemical Reaction
There are four main indicators that a chemical reaction has occurred:
-
Colour Change:
- A visible change in colour signifies a chemical change.
-
Effervescence:
- The production of gas bubbles during a reaction indicates effervescence.
-
Precipitation:
- The formation of a solid from a solution during a chemical reaction.
-
Energy (Temperature) Change:
- A reaction that absorbs or releases heat, resulting in a temperature change.
Understanding Reaction Rates
- The rate of a reaction refers to the speed at which reactants are converted into products.
- Reaction rates can be measured and illustrated using a rate graph.
