10.5 Temples in India: marvelous stone architecture for eternity

[Music] swagatham in previous video we discussed about town planning in town planning video we discussed what are the various types of towns what are the various designs possible in town making the towns and Road networks in town also we discussed about the Sabha assembly in the town now another interesting topic in vastu will be the temple architecture to understand Temple architecture first of all we must know the different temples in India and their beautiful architecture so let us take one by one first temple which I want to I would like to explain or show here is tanjavur Temple which is also called as bradishwara Temple this Temple was built thousand years back using granite it was laid on a precise plan of 16 by 16 squares a design known as in the dravida architecture of Southern India the 16 by 16 squares that mandala system which we have seen vastu purusha mandala there I have explained what are this one by one square or 16 by 16 square or eight by eight square mean based on that system this Temple is built on 16 by 16 squares the Vimana that is known as Tower is 99 feet structure above the sanctum sanctum means where the idol of the God will be found from that part it is 99 feet above now it means 99 feet of structure you can find as a tower and it is one of the tallest in South India then comes shikhara a dome which is of 80 tons which is Atop The Tower Atop The Vimana the 80 tons weighing Dome is kept and that is one block of granite isn't it very amusing now this part is very interesting now we have discussed that this bradyshura Temple is built using Granite to make it more interesting let me tell that there is no supply of granite in the vicinity of the temple side that is about 60 kilometer it is not clear how these Stones were sourced and conveyed to the top of the tower one more very beautiful thing about this Temple is there are musical pillars in the mantapa when you hit the pillars they make musical sounds like saregama padanisa and these type of carving requires the knowledge of sound sound frequency and not only that the stones must also have that type of frequencies and knowledge of such Stones is very important not only in this Temple but in several Indian temples we can find the musical pillars this Temple has been stable structure for Thousand Years many earthquakes have come at this place that's what historians say but still this Temple have been stable for Thousand Years in contrast the Leaning Tower of Pisa which is called as one of the wonders of the world began to lean during its construction in 12th century due to soft ground which could not properly support the structure Suite but that's not the case with temple even till this date it is standing erect without leaning now this was one Temple such a beautiful explanation we saw so this explanation does not finish here you can find many more Marvels about this Temple but let's move into another Temple which is Sun Temple at konark this Temple is built of stone in 12050 CE in the form of a gigantic Chariot dedicated to the sun god to add to more information to this Temple there are 24 elaboratory carved Stone Wheels symbolizing 24 pakshas in a year each of 12 feet diameter and the wheels of the temple are sundials actually they actually show the time which can be used to calculate time accurately to a minute the seven horses are at the front symbolically pulling the Chariot as this is a temple of Sun the legend has it that this the Chariot of sun is actually pulled by seven horses so those seven horses are also placed symbolically in this Temple the minute and beautiful carvings of the temple show its danger in iconography too the original Temple had a Vimana which is estimated to be somewhere around 229 feet tall but the main Vimana which which is 229 feet tall fell in 1837. one more amusing thing which will make more interested to see this Temple actually the first Ray of sun from the coast would cross the natamandira and would fall and reflect from the diamond placed at the crown of the sun god this happens every day to make this happen every day one must have the knowledge of astronomy that to very high level of knowledge is required so [Music] he must know all the aspects of astronomy not only for this about the race of sun but also to construct that minute calculation of timings also the chakras which were created for that also the knowledge of astronomy becomes very handy another Temple if we want if we would like to take that will be kailasa temple in ellora one of the one of my favorites one of the most spectacular monuments in the world and the largest struck out structure anywhere the kailasa temple to give its address its KO 16 in ellora was built by Krishna one a rashtrakuta king and it is notable for its vertical excavation usually we see that the temples are built from the foundation to the shikhara but in the context of this Temple it is opposite it is excavated from upwards to the downwards built by digging out a sloping Basalt Hill with the two massive trenches each 90 meter long and joined with a connecting trench 53 meter in length the temple was then carved from the remaining central portion this resulted in 32 meter high structure that seems to come out of the ground there is a three-story Vimana that we have already understood what Vimana means it's a tower with an octagonal Dome and two huge freestanding columns flanking the mandapa entrance hall which has 16 columns set in a group of groups of four according to UNESCO it is one of the most remarkable of all KU temples in India on account of its striking proportion elaborate workmanship of architectural members and sculptural treatment also UNESCO reports that it is decorated with some of the boldest and finest culture compositions to be found in India in its Sabha that Sabha mandapa which is known as rangam Mahal there is a preservation of some of the beautiful paintings belonging to two different periods so in this whole video we understood the three types of Temple and the beauty of architecture which is found in this this is not all many temples you can see in India which are such beautiful architecture for this we need to understand the temple architecture part what does it belong what all things come under its categories what are the various aspects which we need to know for knowing this we have to see the next video so meet you in next video namaste [Music] foreign
