Types of Crimes and Their Consequences

1. Infraction

  • Definition: Lowest level of crime.
  • Examples:
    • Speeding ticket
    • Playing music too loud
    • Hosting a noisy party
  • Consequences:
    • No jail time
    • Typically results in a fine
    • No arrest involved

2. Misdemeanor

  • Definition: More serious than an infraction.
  • Examples:
    • Possession of concentrated marijuana
    • Under Prop 47, possession of cocaine
  • Consequences:
    • Likely arrest
    • Possibility of spending time in jail
    • Maximum jail time: 1 year
    • Fines typically do not exceed $1,000

3. Felony

  • Definition: Most serious level of crime.
  • Examples:
    • Murder
    • Rape
    • Robbery
    • Drug sales
    • Felons possessing guns
  • Consequences:
    • Maximum penalty could be death
    • Includes serious crimes potentially punishable by death (e.g., certain murders)
