in this lecture we're going to discuss plagiarism because plagiarism is an ethical issue it's an academic issue and it's a professional issue plagiarism is an ethical decision that involves weighing a potential course of action against a set of ethical standards in the classroom plagiarism can result in failing a failing grade it can result in dismissal from a class or even in dismissal of a program or the university I don't say that to scare you but I but to really emphasize that it is such an important issue and that's why we're going to take time to really think about plagiarism and how to avoid it outside the classroom plagiarism can even damage a writer or speakers reputation or career so again this is important for you not only now but in the future in written work or in oral presentations plagiarism involves the wrongful act of representing words or ideas of another as your own without properly referencing the source at the college of law this applies to papers case briefs discussions exams and article reviews or reading reviews that you'll have in your assignments because plagiarism is such an important issue we want you to be aware of three forms of plagiarism there are global plagiarism patchwork plays plagiarism and incremental plagiarism we have found that these three forms of plagiarism are much easier to engage in because of the internet it is much easier now to either engage in this intentionally or accidental but the more where you are of these forms of plagiarism the less likely you will engage in this activity mobile pager ism involves stealing an entire passage from a single source and passing it off as your own work patchwork plagiarism involves taking ideas or language from two or three sources and then passing it off as your own incremental plagiarism involves failing to give credit for particular parts of a paper that are borrowed from other people each of these can be avoided by properly citing paraphrasing and summarizing your work you know when we let's go back and take a look at global plagiarism stealing an entire passage it's sometimes people put off doing their assignments and then they go into the internet they find just what they want to say or they think that would be a good response and they just copy and paste that onto a document one simple way to avoid these three forms of plagiarism is to simply not copy and paste it's easy to copy and paste and to change a few words around and have that included in your response so please avoid copying and pasting be sure that you're always copying the URL so you can appropriately cite the source that you would like to include in your paper there are some guidelines for how to use quotes the primary guideline is to make sure that you always put your quotation marks and that you be sure that you include an in-text citation that includes a source and the page number or paragraph number of that citation and these quotes should support your own ideas and be blended or integrated into the paragraph instead of left to stand alone you want to use direct quotes to add emphasis or to provide clarity and in accurate accuracy use quotes when the original author's language adds impact to your own ideas and in if you're working on a reading review or a case brief be sure that if you quote something that the quote comes from the case not from the the websites interpretation of that case anytime that you're taking information from a source that is not your own you need to specify where you got that information these three ways of incorporating others writers work into your own writing differ according to the closeness of your writing to the sources writing so quotations must be identical to the original source using a narrow segment of the source and they must match the source document word-for-word and being you must attribute that to the original author with the use of a citation and a reference another way to use what you find is paraphrasing paraphrasing involves putting a passage from a source material into your own words a paraphrase must also attribute to the original source paraphrase material is usually shorter than the original passage taking it a somewhat broader segment of the source and condensing it summarizing involves putting the main ideas into your own words including only the main points the main themes and once again it is necessary to attribute the summarized ideas to the original source as a result you need to make sure you have citations and reference for that source again summaries are significantly shorter than the original and it takes a broad overview you'll be using quotations paraphrasing and summarizing both in your discussions your reading your views case briefs so it's going to be important to kind of develop your skills in both in integrated quo it's paraphrasing and summarizing information and so in your feedback we'll give you information that will help you improve how you summarize how you use quotes and how you summer paraphrase information so please again I emphasize the importance of reading your feedback and following the instructions that we provide in the course guidelines these things will help you develop your ability to appropriately quote summarize and paraphrase without having an issue of plagiarism and that's our goal here is to help educate you so that you become a writer that is free of issues of plagiarism you
