over the past few weeks I have been studying film a three-time Olympic and World Champ Adam satiev and as I have watched in awe at the ridiculous Feats that he was able to pull off a question occurs to me was Adam satiev the most talented freestyle wrestler of all time now I know what some of you are thinking that Adam isn't even the most talented wrestler in his own family his brother bhuvasar was a nine-time Olympic and World Champion and is widely considered the greatest freestyle wrestler of all time but having now watched film of both brothers I'm not so sure that bubastar was better in terms of skill and athleticism one thing to consider when comparing their resumes is that Adam being the younger brother actually competed in a weight class above his natural weight to avoid having to compete with his older brother for the 74 or 76 kilogram spot on the Russian team in an interview last year Adams said that he weighed 80 kilograms when he won the 85 kilogram division at the 2000 Olympics for my American friends that means he was around 11 pounds under the weight limit and when you consider that some of his opponents were likely cutting at least 10 pounds that means he was giving up in some cases more than 20 pounds in weight and yet in spite of that still won the division Adam also reportedly dealt with a number of injuries over the course of his career that limited his ability to compete in his many World Championships in Olympics as his brother what made him so good in this video I'll provide an overview of some of the things that made Adam said tea of great I'll Focus Less on the particulars and the techniques the depth if you will which I'll save for future videos and focus more on the breadth of his game let's begin with the move Adam is probably best known for which was his inside trip in Judo there is a concept called tokui waza which translates as signature move Adam's tokuiwaza was undoubtedly his inside trip which he used successfully throughout his entire career to perform the move he would typically start from a clinched position which could include an underhook overhook or an over under use his right leg to hook the opponent's left lower leg drive off his back leg and sink his weight depending on the situation he would sometimes use his arms to catch the hooked leg and assist with the Finish such as in this memorable clip against you all Romero at the 2000 Olympic finals he was also skilled at chaining his inside trip with other throws such as with uchimada and with outside leg hook variations Adam's throwing ability was probably the most technically proficient I've seen in Freestyle Wrestling take this throw for instance or Adam cross steps with his right leg to block the opponent's right leg anticipates the opponent retracting the blocked leg steps forward and high legs with his right thigh to elevate the opponent's ankle and rotate him to the ground while maintaining the over under grips this is the type of throw chain that you will see in Elite level Judo but not as much in wrestling in this one he uses his right leg to hook the opponent's left leg again anticipates the retraction and takes a big step with his right leg to shelve the opponent's left leg on his thigh followed by a lateral drop here's his brother buvisar doing the exact same thing here Adam goes inside trip feels the opponent retract his hooked leg then steps behind the opponent's other knee to block it and uses a body lock to Pivot and rotate the opponent over his blocked leg of course he could also combine his throws with leg grabs such as this example of an uchimata to knee pic [Music] and as we already saw he will sometimes grab a leg to help finish his inside trips speaking of leg grabs one interesting thing about Adam is that he seldom shot in on an opponent's legs instead of relying on shots to grab the legs he would often get to singles while attacking the upper body this could be often underhook throw by the overhook limp arm a seat belt underhook he could get to a single off overtime Slide by his chain with foot sweeps two on one foot sweeps here he counters an opponent's two on one hooks outside the leg gets the single then sweeps the post lug out here it's an inside foot sweep outside leg hook to single and then every once in a while you will catch him shooting we've touched on it a bit already but one thing Adam was very effective with was foot sweep variations sometimes he could hit them cleanly such as in the slide by the outside foot sweep here's another outside foot sweep he also liked to do the knee wheel style or he would block the target leg while rotating the opponent over his immobilized leg more than anything foot sweeps or blocks or something Adam used to both threaten takedowns but also to off balance the opponent and help set up other attacks here it's an inside foot sweep to an ankle pick here the outside foot sweep helps immobilize the leg to make it easier to grab same idea here it forces the opponent to square his hips which opens up an angle for the uchimada to go behind in this one an outside foot sweep forces the opponent to retract the leg which Adam follows blocks with his knee and twists the opponent to the mat just another example of his ridiculously skilled throw footwork this outside foot sweep helps set up the low single here the opponent starts taking his back and Adam goes inside foot sweep because why not by the way note the old school use of the Russian wrist snap by the opponent Olympic gold medalist gervani muradov a move that has gained a lot of popularity lately the next topic to cover is Adam's insane ability to counter his opponent's attacks despite spending a lot of time hanging out in a clinch position trying to throw Adam was generally a tall task in all of the footage I was able to find this double underhook throw by yoel Romero from the 2002 World Championships was the only example I could find of Adam getting hit cleanly with an upper body throw here's an opponent's inside trip attempt gone wrong here the opponent cinches a body lock lifts him off the ground but finds himself getting reversed due to Adam's upper body controls and a pesky inside Grapevine in this one the opponent gets a good bite on double overhooks and goes lateral drop but Adam posts on his head and bases out on his right knee to avoid the takedown here he gets his hips inside against the opponent's body lock switches his hips and Scoops the leg here he absorbs the inside trip attempt and masterfully turns the tables on the opponent by pivoting through for his own twisting throw this one is just freaky he definitely times the opponent's outside leg hook attempt circles his right leg to the outside to block the opponent's left knee sinks his weight and pivots through the throw just spectacular timing here's five-time Olympic and World Champion shohei Ono doing a similar action where he evades the opponent's outside leg hook gets an outside leg hook or block of his own and uses it to off balance the opponent to his back check out Adams and show Hate's throws side by side Adam was perhaps unsurprisingly really good at countering single legs the club plus trip combo in particular was a risky Gambit against him here he hit the throw by on the club arm in this one he jumps over the triple leg catches an underhook on the club arm and pulls the opponent to the ground on his way down amazing [Music] he was also great at ankle picking opponents who shelved his right leg on their outside hip here he somehow ankle picks the opponent's tripping leg and ends up on a single leg of his own one of his most devastating counters was his cartwheel which he used to get out of a lot of jams [Music] versatilev the cartwheel was a last line of defense that allowed him to avoid takedowns even when the opponent was deep on his legs and it sometimes even allowed him to turn the tables and get a takedown of his own foreign the last thing we'll cover in this video is Adam's use of what I'll call the rear chest lock position this position where Adam would lock his hands behind both of the opponent's arms was something he was constantly looking for to help solidify his go-behinds in many instances of getting to the rear chest lock Adam would have his right leg inside what you might call a Merkel position which he would look to eventually retract to finish the takedown although in some instances he would keep it in and perform an uchimada to break the opponent down to their far hip Adam would also look for splatals from the rear chest lock position to hit these he would keep his right leg inside laced at the opponent's ankle cover the opponent's head bring his right arm through as if he were hitting a switch use his hands plus leg drive to break the opponent down to his hip then roll through all of this Plato examples I found from his practice footage were done with his right leg inside but amazingly the one example I found of him hitting the move in competition was with his left leg inside so where do we go from here aspects of Adam's game that I would be interested in exploring further include his underhook throw by which he often paired with a foot block [Music] his inside trip his upper body throws in general his takedown defense his use of the rear chest lock position [Music] foot sweeps and blocks the use of the color tie shock setup which he and his brother both used a lot among possible other topics which topics would you like to see broken down and do you think Adam satiev is in the conversation for the most talented freestyle wrestler of all time let me know the answer to both questions in the comments below
