Observing the Hard Palate

Preparation

  • Have the patient tilt their head back.
  • Retrieve and use a dental mirror for observation.

Key Structures to Observe

  • Incisive Papilla: Located behind the maxillary central incisors.
  • Median Palatine Raphae: A ridge along the midline of the palate.
  • Palatal Rugae: The ridges on the anterior part of the hard palate.

Observation Technique

  • Use the mirror for observation; do not bend over, maintaining proper posture.

Palpation Technique

  • Inform the patient that palpation might feel ticklish.
  • Use a digital palpation technique to feel the palate.
  • Be aware that extra bone could be present, known as Palatal Tori; common but normal.

Maxillary Tuberosities

  • Observe and palpate the maxillary tuberosities using digital palpation.
  • Ensure to explain the sensation to the patient to make them comfortable.
